Chain Kulii Ki Main Kulii Movie Review: First Innings
Personally speaking, I am not a big fan of cricket. Oh, come on, I watch India-Pakistan matches like every other Indian, but beyond that, I’m not too crazy for the game. And I’m sure that right now hard core cricket enthusiasts are still sore about the unfortunate performance at the World Cup. In fact, almost every brand has had to create new ads because of this, as no one wants to hear about cricket anymore. It is not only ad guys, but even a lot of film guys have suffered because of the men in blue-scores of cricket based movies were set to release to cash in on the bounties of the World Cup. But few saw light of day.

One of those that did is Chain Kulii Ki Main Kulii. When I heard about this one, I groaned from within because I had it up till here with cricket. With much trepidation, I went to watch it. I must admit, in all sincerity, it is really not that bad. In fact, though it is based on cricket, it has a much bigger agenda to it - one that most movies do not have today. It is a feel good movie.

The film revolves around Karan (Zain Khan) who lives in an orphanage. It is not an easy life and the poor kids are made to do all the work. Seems reminiscent of a certain movie called King Uncle, but we will let that pass. Obviously, there has to be a tormentor amongst the kids who bullies the hell out of our sweet innocent boy. Anyway, moving on, one fine day someone donates a lot of old toys to the orphanage. The children are ecstatic, and hurry to get the best. Both Karan and the bully spot an old cricket bat and want it. This time, our hero boy gets lucky and gets the bat. You see, the care taker of the orphanage often spoke about Kapil Dev and his glory days and ever since, the little kid wanted to be a cricketer. Soon Karan realizes that his bat is no ordinary bat, but is magical and ensures a boundary.
Luckily for him, the Indian team’s coach sees this little boy and his bat in action and takes him on. Believe it or not, but the kid is now one of the men in blue and not only that, since the team is in bad shape, he is the opening batsman with the captain, Varun Roy (Rahul Bose). Despite the ridiculous situation and the vast age difference, the two become close buddies. Karan finds an older brother presence in Varun and the latter learns to deal with his own demons with the little boy’s help. The magic bat breaks tragically before the last match, read the most important one. So what does Karan do?
Admitted, it is not the most believable story in the world. A kid on the team?! The logic is all wrong. But you know what? That really does not matter as it is supposed to be a childrens’ movie and every kid dreams of this very thing. Though the film sags at places, it is definitely watchable. Though Rahul Bose gives a great performance, Zain Khan comes across as a natural and steals the show.
Our verdict? You want to get all pumped up on a rainy day? Go watch this film. You will leave the theatre feeling just that.
