Naqaab Movie Review: The quest for the hidden truth
It’s unbelievable, actually. The amount of money that has been put behind the promotions of the movie Naqaab is simply astounding. Or the past two months, every time I switch the TV on, there is no way that I may miss the trailer of the movie. That got me sort of intrigued. They were making a big hue and cry about this amazing thriller that is going to rock everyone’s world. To intensify the mystery behind the story line and to tantalize the unsuspecting and let us admit, intrigued viewers, the movie promos have everyone looking like a killer. Plus they got themselves a really fancy name to boot - Naqaab. I guess it’s with all the masked heroes around - Spiderman, Kkrish… et all. You know, like a good luck charm. So I went along and saw the movie.

Sadly, I have to say that the lucky charm is really not lucky for them and it does not matter how much money they have out into the movie because it is undoubtedly NOT the best thriller of the year. In fact, it has the same chance of a candle in a storm. Abbas-Mastan are treated and referred to as the director duo from Hogwarts (read magical) who have come back with this master piece for all of us. And why is it a masterpiece? Well, it has names like Akshaye Khanna and Bobby Deol. It is also starring the Ultra chic Urvashi Sharma as the female lead. And basically, it is the best thing that happened to Indian cinema. It is this extremely original story about a young, pretty girl, Sophie (Urvashi Sharma).

Though Sophie is from a middle class family, she has big aspirations and seems to have gotten her high ride ticket in Karan Khanna (Bobby Deol). Karan is a highly successful and highly rich entrepreneur and is young and handsome too. He likes Sophie’s looks and she likes his bank account, so they decide to get hitched. But after the initial high that money brings, she starts feeling bored. She realizes that she does not love Karan and this realization becomes more concrete when she meets Vicky Malhotra (Akshaye Khanna) who is an out of work actor. In this tangled web, there are a host of other avoidable characters.

I think it is imperative to point out that the directors have made this movie before - Humraaz, which incidentally starred the two male leads. There is nothing original, nor interesting in anything shown in this movie. The plot, even though it is copied, looks bungled up and the characters are so shallow, they are almost transparent. The much talked about Ms. Sharma is great, but only until she opens her mouth. It’s all the way downhill from there. Though not bad, Akshaye does not suit the role of a young, struggling actor anymore and if I have to see Bobby Deol as a rich industrialist one more time, I think I will scream.
So folks, that is all I have to say. You like your money, you won’t waste it. The way things are going, I think all those involved in this flick will be wearing naqaabs to hide their embarrassment.
