“I got to ride cars, carry guns, wear the best of suits and at the same time, I got to romance Dia Mirza too.” Irrfan says. “But shooting the action part of the movie has been very tough. There was this particular shooting in South Africa, where we were required to go on cars in full speed. Even the action director Tinnu Verma was amazed at the scenes that have been canned for the movie. I was required to jump from a car and hang on to a van that is passing by and aim and shoot at a flying helicopter. Tinnu was not happy with my shoot and he asked me to go lower and lower. Finally I said I would not be alive to shoot for the film if he asked me to go any lower. The shoot went off smoothly after that,” he recalls.

Irrfan further adds that the perks at the end of the shoot were more interesting. “We used to party a lot after all the action. We used to have great fun.” he concludes.

While Sanjay Gupta’s Acid Factory first look launch was a rocking event for everyone, one actor from the film sulked at the party and that was Gulshan Grover.

Acid Factory is a multi starrer starring Manoj Bajpai, Irrfan Khan, Fardeen Khan, Aftab Shivdasani, Dino Morea and Dia Mirza apart from Gulshan Grover. Almost every single actor and crew member connected to the film was present there. When the event proceedings began, the emcees of the event actor Rohit Roy and singer Manasi Scott heaped loads of praises on all of them excluding Gulshan Grover who has a very significant role in the film as he plays the role of the uncle of the main leads. The Bollywood bad man known for being a thorough gentleman off screen was visibly upset over this. So when it was his time to speak he vented out his frustration in a sarcastic manner in front of the media and expressed his displeasure to Sanjay Gupta. Gulshan has worked in many Gupta films right from Aatish to Kaante and certainly the pain could be understood.

We wonder why Sanjay Gupta continues to rub his long associated people the wrong way. First Sanjay Dutt then business associate Dharam Oberoi, then again last weekend there was news about Gupta and Irrfan Khan having payment related issues and now this live example!

In this conversation Irfan revealed about his love life too. “Sallu directly told Irfan that you are having an affair. Irfan immediately accepted and said yes, there is someone and her name is Shubhangi,” says the source.

“Irfan also sang the song, he serenaded for his girlfriend. It was from Sallu miya’s film Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya, Oh oh jane jaana, both Salman and Irfan, then broke into an impromptu song-and-dance with Shilpa joining the fun,” adds the source.

Omar (Neil) is picked up by the FBI and detained for arms found in his owned taxi. Basically it’s a well planned set up by FBI officer Roshan (Irrfan) and his boss to get Omar agreeing on to work as an undercover agent for them and infiltrate the family the life of Samir (John) and Maya (Katrina) who were Omar’s college friends 7-8 years back.

Roshan suspects Samir of running a sleeper terrorism cell and he wants to nab him red handed. Omar is left with no option but to comply with Roshan’s orders but he agrees on one condition that the FBI won’t kill Samir if he agrees to surrender. Years back when in college Omar, Maya and Samir were thick buddies and Omar silently loved Maya but when she expressed her love for Samir, Omar had gone away from them.

What truth Omar uncovers when he meets Samir and Maya both now a married couple with a small kid Danielle and what it all leads to forms the rest of the film.

New York can easily be considered the best film to come out of the Yash Raj stable after Chak De India. Shot entirely in the US, the film not only is on par with the best of the Hollywood films made in this genre but is a completely different experience which the Bollywood audience is not used to.

You are completely hooked from the first scene of the film when Neil is arrested by FBI and the interrogation that follows by Irrfan of Neil’s. The first half is extremely well narrated and keeps you constantly guessing as to what will happen next. The interval point is a shocker and you look forward to an exciting second half. But then the pace of the second half somehow doesn’t match up that of the first half and there are some predictable things in store.

But nonetheless it is packed with some really great moments. The whole frisking episode of Katrina Kaif by a cop on the road late at night and the sequences that follow it linger on your mind for long. The climax though a bit word heavy is superbly shot as well. The torture scenes shown immediately post the interval send a shiver down your spine. Pritam’s music is easy on the ears and there are no lip sync songs to hamper the proceedings.

New York scores high in the acting department with each single actor delivering his/her best. John Abraham often termed as an expressionless actor has delivered his career’s finest performance. Katrina Kaif has finally got the meatiest role of her career and she has taken full advantage of it. She is very good in emotional scenes as well.

Neil in a difficult part shines. Irrfan Khan never disappoints and here again he is in great form. His scenes with Neil and also his senior officer have turned out well.

New York takes up a topical theme and perfectly exposes the wily ways of the American FBI to which over hundreds of innocent Muslim people had fallen prey to post 9/11. It is a must watch for many reasons so just don’t miss it.

Irrfan adds, “Indian actors are IN these days, they are in fashion now. I have got better roles in Hollywood where they have revised the script where, an American character has been turned Indian, with an Indian name, Indian accent living in the US. It is about marketing eventually, so the film makers are going to cash in on Indian actors and characters. I am glad many Indian actors will in the process; get a better chance to showcase their talent”.

Irrfan has lot of projects lined up for the year with Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Pan Singh Tomar, Hiss with Mallika Sherawat; Yash Raj films New York, Sanjay Gupta’s Acid Factory. Irrfan has also been offered a lot of Hollywood projects like, Peter Rice’s untitled next; Irrfan has also been offered the Hollywood adaptation of the booker prize winning novel Life Of Pi written by Yann Martel, to be directed by Ang Lee.

Our source reveals, “This happened many weeks back but Irrfan is now fit and fine. But since it was a ligament tear, doctors had advised rest for hi and therefore few days all his shootings had been stopped. Though Pan Singh Tomar’s shooting in Rourkee has been completed and one more schedule is still left, which will take place in a month’s time.”

Pan Singh Tomar tells the true story of a steeple chase athlete who came out of a dacoit struck area to make a name for himself but returned to his hometown only to pick up arms and turn into a dacoit. Irrfan plays the title role with Mahie Gill of Dev D and Gulaal fame playing his wife.

Starting with when he plays an Army Officer he has a very thick moustache, for the athlete scenes he has a very thin facial hair, for the villager scene he has a clean shaven look and finally for the dacoit scenes he has a stubble look. Irrfan has put in a lot of effort for the movie.

“It’s blazing hot” said a spokes person. A source close to the unit said that, “Irrfan has been shooting continuously in the hot sun under soaring temperatures.” While shooting for a scene Irrfan felt very uneasy and had a blackout, he got dehydrated and to his luck it wasn’t very serious. It was just too much of heat and too much of work which caused this dehydration adds another source. Now Irrfan is fine and is continuing his shooting schedule.

A unit source reveals, “Our whole crew had to face a harrowing time but were given complete protection during the shoot. After the incident the whole crew was given special coverage and especially Irrfan. The whole crew was scared and didn’t know how to react as they had seen dacoits only in the movie and none of them had seen them face to face.”

Irrfan who is currently shooting in Roorkee, is intimated by the ravines of Chambal which he calls one of the most haunting place he’s seen. Irrfan recollects that these places are dangerous with their steep climbs and valleys but at the same time they are so beautiful.

The film is based on the real biopic of Pan Singh Tomar. Pan Singh Tomar hailed from a small town in Madhya Pradesh was a soldier and an athlete. He won the steeplechase in India’s National Games for seven years in a row and his record stood unbeaten for 10 years. After retirement, Tomar went back to his home town and turned into a dacoit in the Chambal Valley after becoming a victim of social injustice. The protagonist’s life that spans 1950 to 1980. Irrfan has trained himself in hurdle racing for the film. He will have different looks in the film. He grew a real thick moustache for his scenes in the army. Then we move to his sports scenes where he requires thinner facial hair. Then for his scenes as a villager, he’ll have to be clean shaven and finally as a dacoit he’ll sport a stubble all through.

Q. Where do you normally shop your clothes from?
A. I am not all that shopoholic a person. I like wearing simple and plain clothes. I buy my stuffs from anywhere. The only priority is that it should be comfortable. If it’s so I don’t mind picking stuffs even from Fashion Street.

Q. Which brands do you prefer to buy?
A. Again, I am not a brand conscious person.

Q. Do you often visit fashion shows?
A. Hmmm(thinks..) actually not much . That’s what I can say.

Q. Who is your favorite fashion designer?
A. Has to be Valentino.

Q. Which is the costliest outfit you have bought till date?
A. It was a suit that cost me a good 20K.

Mahie is back from its long schedule in Rajasthan and just can’t stop raving about her co-star Irrfan Khan who plays her hubby in the film. She says, “Irrfan has been one of my favourite actors. Working with him has been dream come true of sorts for me. He is such an amazing actor and is so witty that he made me laugh like mad. But at the same time, when it came to acting, he got really serious and focused. That’s where his versatility lies. He may be a respected star in India but worldwide he is appreciated much for his body of work in Hollywood projects like Slumdog Millionaire and Mighty Heart. Just to say I worked with him makes me proud. It was a pleasure working with him and being his costar.”

Elaborating more about her role in Paan Singh Tomar, Mahie says, “My character has different shades which are further revealed as the story moves ahead. Beyond this I can’t reveal much more.”
