Says Ajay “I’m directing a film in mid-2009. There is no role for Kajol in my next film. It’s as simple as that.The leading lady’s role in that film doesn’t suit her,” says the ever-pragmatic Devgan known to never mince his words.

This time as a director Ajay wants to return to his roots. “I haven’t done a full-on action film for ages. My next film as a director would be an actioner with an undercurrent of dark humour.Even Milan Luthria’s film that I’m acting in, is an actioner. I believe audiences want to see me back in action.In fact when I made my entry balanced between two speeding cars in Golmaal Returns people immediately remembered my entry in my first film Phool Aur Kante. The action in my directorial venture will be something unusual.” says Ajay whose directorial debut U Me Aur Hum was critically praised for its brave portrayal of the ravages of Alzheimers.

Ajay feels action scenes have become much safer now. “Earlier we had to do it all and by ourselves. I’ve broken so many bones. Now when you jump from the fifth floor you’re harnessed.Earlier you just did it, or didn’t.”

He clearly feels too much has been made out of his bonding with Salman Khan during the shooting of Vipul Shah’s London Dreams. “We hit it off well. We always have ever since we did Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam together. But we didn’t go out partying and pubbing every night together, as was reported. And we aren’t in touch with one another now that we’re back in Mumbai. We all have our work and family to attend to. And he didn’t present me with any paintings. Where did that come from? I’m right now neck-deep in producing my next film and putting together my next directorial venture.”

Ajay plays a musician in London Dreams. And it required him to alter his looks. “I needed to look cooler. So I cut my hair, grew a stubble. Salman and I play very close friends , so naturally we had to have a certain amount of bonding between us. But that’s it. What I really enjoyed was shooting in London at one go. No distractions. Vipul is one of the most organized filmmakers I’ve worked out. And I didn’t get much of a chance to miss my family. Kajol and my daughter came for a visit.”

Says a source, “Ajay is not the kind of guy who can hang around his partner’s sets. If it was another unit, perhaps Ajay would’ve considered visiting his wife. But not Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan. Though outwardly Ajay is normal with them there’s actually no love lost between him and the Khan-Johar team. He would never be seen anywhere near their shooting even if it means being away from his wife and daughter for months.”

Staying away his daughter for almost two months is specially hard on Ajay.

Considering the her long absence from Mumbai, earlier this week Kajol flew down with her daughter to join her husband in Goa where he’s shooting.

She flies into San Francisco with Shah Rukh on Thursday for one of the toughest shooting schedules ever.

Says a source, “With the attack on NRI students in Australia on one end and the swine flu on the other end Karan Johar is more tense about this schedule in the US than ever before. In fact fearing a fan invasion Karan didn’t want it to be known that he was shooting in San Francisco. Also, the sensitive theme (post-terrorism Islamic threat) automatically makes the project suspicion in the minds of the American authorities. Karan wants to avoid all the hassles he went through in his last American schedule when some members of his cast were denied visas, then he was denied permission to shoot in religiously sensitive places in America and finally Karan was pulled up for default of payments. Karan wants to keep it completely low profile.”

But with Kajol and Shah Rukh around can any shooting be low profile?

It is learnt to be featuring the latest innovations in computer graphics matching International cinema standards. However though K2H2 was a very successful film marking the debut of Karan Johar as a director, its animated version is not being directed by him but his Dostana director Tarun Mansukhani.

There was also speculation whether Salman Khan who featured in a Filmfare Award winning performance in the film would dub for his animated character since him and SRK have had a fall out. But now we have learnt that his character will be dubbed by Ritesh Deshmukh. The names of stars who shall lend their voices for this animated film are – Shahrukh Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukerji, Uday Chopra, Riteish Deshmukh, Simi Garewal and Sajid Khan.

Post SRK coming back from his IPL 2 commitments from South Africa there is yet another schedule being planned for the US. But Kajol it seems is not too keen on shooting out of India given that she has to leave her daughter Nysa back home now that she’s going to school. So while the shooting in Mumbai in June coincided with Nysa’s school days, Kajol had no problems. But Karan also has to shoot some more sequences in New York, which Kajol is refusing to oblige with. She was informed that there would be only one schedule in the US, which she’d agreed to. But now since Karan wants to go back for whatever reasons, Kajol is adamant and just won’t.”

Another insider reveals, “Karan expects that his good friend understands his problem but Kajol wants him to shoot these portions in Mumbai itself on specially built sets. But Karan being Karan he just doesn’t want to compromise on such things. So now that’s a deadlock even the King Khan might not be able to resolve.”

It is learnt that while Kajol was a little apprehensive of doing the difficult action scenes, Jack managed to convince her to go ahead without fear.

“Kajol is quiet a lot like my wife in the sense that she does not want to do action. She likes love stories and drama. I kind of identify with her. She is a beautiful lady but I had to coax her to do the stunt with Ajay. It was just a single shot and was not very difficult but I could see fear in her eyes. She is not comfortable with it like Julia Roberts who does not like action at all. Julia had this fear of heights and I had to go slow with her. It took her a while to get used to it” Jack tells us.

Jack had Ajay’s image as an action hero before he began the actual shoot for the film. “But it took a while for him to get back to action since he has been out of it for sometime. He was sore for the first 3 to 4 weeks we had to work on him. He didn’t realize that would get so rigorous.” says Jack.

“We had something called the cage and along it the rest piece of equipment to make it believable. It lifts the actor high up in the air 20 to 30 meters and twists his body spiraling him up to the camera. He’s looking up at the camera as it is above him. Lifting the camera and actor as one piece of machinery can make anyone feel dizzy. It’s tough but he picked it up fast” reveals the action director.

But shooting in Mumbai has not been easy ride for Jack. Jack says, “We got cutting edge equipment from the US, which was first for any Bollywood film. It was a new technique for them and it was taxing too. Especially the manual hydraulic devices which can pull you up from one place and fly you across stage and land you right in front of the camera. It can be dangerous. If you don’t handle the rig properly it can break your legs.”

Currently shooting for Wild Hogs 2, Jack Gill says that Hollywood style action is fast picking up India. “I always thought Bollywood was just one area in Mumbai but when I came here I realized it was spread all over Mumbai.” But then did he have communication problems? “Well language was no issue. I work through gestures. There was no problem communicating with them. I have got used to the food here. But now food back home is going to taste strange since I am so used to the spicy food.” Jack concludes.

The actress was never as thin as a size zero. But she obviously slacked off on the diet and exercises after she wed Ajay Devgan in 1999 and started her family.

Kabhi Khushi Khabhi Gham was her first hit in which she played an older character. She was obviously heavier in the role. Understandably, as Kajol then had young baby Nysa to take care of, leaving her little time to herself.

But now, as Nysa has grown up, the actress is back to her slender self for the film My Name Is Khan. As with all of Karan Johar’s films, an actress has to look her best.

Kajol followed the trend and lost all that baby weight, her arms and legs are toned and she’s even got back that flat tummy of hers back. Since she shed those extra pounds we can also see a marked improvement in her dress sense. Kajol now looks absolutely stunning.

“For My Name is Khan, she is reducing weight which is very difficult for her to do but she has done it and its very good to see her in that new thin look.”

In My Name is Khan she plays an NRI woman and as per the look of her character, she has to look thin. Hence she had to give up her body weight and start with a special diet.

When asked what made them to sign this film Ajay informs the script and concept of animation with live characters is unique. He says “It’s not just for children but for everyone. It has lots of fun and entertainment value.” But his wife Kajol gives credit to daughter Nyasa. She says, “After Nyasa’s birth I started watching cartoon network. Nyasa and I are very fond of cartoon Disney. Both of us love watching Hungamaa and lots of fun and cartoon channels.” Needless to say mother daughter shares the same interest and Nyasa is the real inspiration to do an Animation film. When asked How excited Nyasa is to see her parents in the film? Ajay replied, “She is excited but she is small to understand this.”

It can be recalled that recently Anurag Kashyap made an animation film called Hanuman returns. He too informs that the reason behind making an animation film was his daughter. Not just that lyricist Prasson Joshi too was inspired by his two year old daughter. He informs that to write lyrics for Taare Zameen Par. It seems daughters are real source of inspiration for our celebs.

10 – Prachi Desai (Rock On)

Her foray into the big screen was much welcomed with ‘Rock On’. An unconventional way to begin her Bollywood innings, what with playing the part of a married woman and no romantic angle per se, Prachi Desai was courageous enough to take a plunge into a film that had a director (Abhishek Kapoor) with a flop tag (Aryan – The Unbrekable) to his name. Still, with people like Farhan Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani, Shanka, Ehsaan and Loy attached to the project, she got herself a start with ‘Rock On’. The ploy worked and how! With a restrained performance, she was the person who got a certain ‘thehrav’ to the rocking proceedings of ‘Rock On’. The million dollar question is – ‘Will she be able to be a part of the glam brigade from here on?’

9 – Ehsaas Channa (Phoonk)

The youngest of the lot, Ehsaas impressed one and all with her performance of a girl who was possessed due to black magic at work. Coming up with one of the most intense performances of the year, Ehsaas was a revelation as a girl actor after working in quite a few films where she was required to portray a boy. One wonders how she would have worked upon her psyche after being a part of cinema where her character was required to go through tumultuous times. Director Ram Gopal Varma yet again succeeded in extracting a brilliant performance out of an actor and one now looks forward to how this girl would announce her arrival as a lead actress a decade from now.

8 – Adah Sharma (1920)

It was the year when possessed females made an impression on the big screen. If Ehsaas was psyched, Adah Sharma was indeed scary, what with her character being almost a cannibal in appeal. Made to play a part which could turn violent, riotus, frightened and ferocious at regular intervals, Adah surprised in this horror flick by Vikram Bhatt. Not just she helped the director break the jinx of a dozen odd flops that he had delivered before 1920, she also announced an arrival, albeit a low key, to Bollywood. Though she was mostly non-glam in 1920 and was made to wear the costumes that were in vogue a century ago, one looks forward to see her look entirely different in the upcoming films of hers that are set in contemporary times.

7 – Asin (Ghajini)

She has worked in more than a dozen odd films down South but had to wait a while before the best opportunity came her way in the form of ‘Ghajini’. Though she had to recreate the emotions of the original ‘Ghajini’ in which she had already starred, she did it with full gusto in the reprised version as well. Going through a gamut of emotions that required her to be naughty as well as emotional at heart, she didn’t disappoint. Her most remembered scenes would the light hearted ones that she shared with Aamir and her death scene. However, one waits to see many more histrionics from her in her upcoming films. A little more touch of glamour would only help the cause.

6 – Bipasha Basu (Race, Bachna Ae Haseeno)

While newcomers like Prachi, Adah and Asin were busy knocking the doors of Bollywood, Bipasha Basu continued her femme fatale act in films like ‘Race’ and ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’. She proved that girls would be girls and women would be women! No wonder, she approached her part in ‘Race’ with such style and sensibilities that one didn’t mind her playing the gray character at all. Some more sizzling dance numbers later, she was the darling of ‘Race’. As for ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’, she was indeed such a ‘bit%^’ (as she proclaimed in the film too) that one wouldn’t mind being her slave at all, as did Ranbir Kapoor in the film.

5 – Kajol (U Me Aur Hum)

It’s a pity that ‘U Me Aur Hum’ didn’t go the distance that it deserved. Though the film did reasonably well at the box office, one would have expected much more buzz around Kajol’s act in the film. As a troubled woman suffering from Alzheimer disease, she was near perfect in the film which was directed by her husband Ajay Devgan. The usual spunk was missing from her performance, as per the demand of her character since she was required to be all tense and pensive for most of the film’s duration. As for her future films too, expect some more serious/meaningful/hard hitting characters to be played by her, something that she seems to be opting for considering her status of being a ‘veteran’ actor already.

4 – Anushka Sharma (Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi)

It is not every day that one sees a debutant leading lady being offered an author backed role in a commercial Yash Raj film outing where she is seen in almost every frame of the film. This way Anushka Sharma was really lucky since she didn’t just get an opportunity to be a part of a film which told a new story and allowed her to display her acting talent; it also made her stand next to Shah Rukh Khan in almost every scene. Anushka grabbed the opportunity provided to her with both hands and went all out in coming up with a sparkling act. Add to that her modeling background and some good dancing skills and we could be looking at yet another star material in the offering.

3 – Aishwarya Rai (Jodhaa Akbar, Sarkar Raj)

While it is hardly a breaking news that Aishwarya Rai looks beautiful in every outing of hers, what is turning out to be a pleasant surprise are some consistently good performances from her year after year. In 2007 it was ‘Guru’ and this year, the films where she came up with some good performances are ‘Sarkar Raj’ and ‘Jodhaa Akbar’. Though her ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ turned out to be a good money spinner and got her quite some accolades, it is ‘Sarkar Raj’ where she impressed even more in the role of a businesswoman. Watch out for her scenes with Amitabh Bachchan and you know that she is confident enough to be standing in front of the best of the talents and still make her presence felt. Credit must go to Ram Gopal Varma who went beyond her beauty, made her wear business suits for most of her scenes and still made her performance noticeable.

2 – Genelia D’Souza (Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa)

The ‘home coming’ award for the year 2008 should go to Genelia D’Souza who came back from hibernation (as far as Bollywood is concerned since she was busy with her work down South) and came up with a flawless performance in ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa’. Even though the film took close to 2 years in the making, spark in Genelia’s performance could be witnessed in each of her scenes. Simply brilliant and the heart of ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa’, she impressed on all quarters, whether it was her delivering her dialogues, being natural in front of the camera or looking just like the character she was required to portray. A powerhouse of talent, she should be much more visible in Bollywood from here on.

1 – Priyanka Chopra (Fashion, Dostana)

And this would well be the comeback of the year! With as many as six flops behind her – ‘Salaam E Ishq’, ‘Big Brother’, ‘Love Story 2050′, ‘Chamku’, ‘Drona’, ‘God Tussi Great Ho’ – any other actress would have just given up. But not Priyanka Chopra who just looked at ‘Fashion’ and ‘Dostana’ as the opportunities that could bring her back into the reckoning. While most of her flops were long in the making, she concentrated completely on these two films which promised to present in a different light altogether. While Madhur Bhandarkar gave her a author backed role in ‘Fashion’, Karan Johar ensured that she turned out to be the scorcher of the year with ‘Dostana’. She impressed on both counts, whether it was acting (Fashion) or looking beautiful (Dostana) and announced loud and clear – ‘I Am Back’.

Her instructor is taking care that Kajol includes lots of nuts, especially almonds in her diet. Apart from keeping a tab on the calorie intake, Kajol is sweating it out at the gym too to cut that extra flab.

Interestingly, SRK had stopped working out as his six pack abs look was not required in Aditya Chopra’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. As far as his look in My Name Is Khan is concerned, he plays an NRI Muslim man here and is required to look lean. We hope that the all new lean looking Kajol and Khan create the same on screen magic like their previous films.

Kajol is also the appointed goodwill ambassador and patron of the UK based Loomba Trust which is a charity devoted to educating widow’s children, particularly in India. Cherie Blair, wife of former Prime Minister Tony Blair is President of the Loomba Trust. Kajol also works with an NGO in education called ‘Shiksha.’
