Incidentally, they left for their secret retreat a day after Saif’s birthday. According to sources, they were busy with prior commitments in Houston due to Independence Day, after which they had to attend a meet and greet event in Chicago. They reached Chicago late in the evening on August 15 and attended the event with Shah Rukh and Katrina, after which they had dinner with them.

Kareena planned the holiday to surprise Saif, informed sources. The destination is still unknown and they will be back in Mumbai by the end of this week.

Our source says, “With Kurbaan, Kareena proves that she is the most versatile actress around. The subjects of Kambakkht Ishq and Kurbaan are as diverse as chalk and cheese and Kareena has done justice to both, said an insider from the industry. Sources inform that her role in Kurbaan is very strong and Kareena has really worked hard on her performances, as well as the look in the film. It may also be known that the actress has always maintained a fine balance between the roles she does. If on one hand we had teeny bopper romantic Mujhe Kuch Kahna Hain, then we also had a Chameli. If there was a Jab We Met, there was also the hardcore Omkara.”

The source adds, “Apparently she is more excited because she has been paired opposite Saif Ali Khan in the movie. Kurbaan is a politically-relevant film about international terrorism. Rensil D’Silva (Rang De Basanti) is directing it. It is after a long time that Kareena will be seen in an absolutely different role. The film shows the difference between fundamental terrorist and modern Islam. It makes a comment on people who kill other people; people who don’t belong to any god. It’s a very entertaining thriller with some wonderful Sufi music.”

But Sudhir feels the khadi-dressed politician is obsolete and also unwarranted. “That stereotypical look goes against the young dynamic honest and incorruptible image of the new Indian politician. Apparently the three generations of Gandhi women Indira, Sonia and Priyanka are being taken into sartorial consideration to model Kareena’s natty neta’s look.

Says Sudhir, “If you remember Kareena’s printed-sari look for Chameli was a craze. I feel Kareena’s politician’s look will also be a craze.”

Reacting to Pritish Nandy’s great sense of betrayal over the apparent translocation of the Devdas script from Pritish Nandy Communications to Excel Films Sudhir says, “All I’ll say is, Mr Nandy is like my elder brother. And if my brother is angry with me I apologize.”

Sudhir has offered to make another film for PNC is lieu of the Devdas project. “We’re yet to work out the details. But the offer is unconditional. Any time he wants me to I’ll make a film for him.”

Are you satisfied with your maiden production venture?Have you given it hundred percent?

Right now, I am nervous since I am newcomer as a producer. Everything is a result of your decision; nonetheless, it has been a different experience. As a producer you are never satisfied, you want more and more but we have taken care of every detail and it has been organized well. We have had a great team, and I have learnt a lot in the process. My partner Dinesh Vijan has been a great help. I was more involved in the creative aspect of the film. But it has been an exciting journey.

Many of your contemporaries have already become producers; did you take tips from them?

I think I have been fortunate in working with few great producers and big established banners. I have learned a lot of things from friends like Yash Raj Productions and Dharma Productions. As for my friends Karan Johar and Farhan Akhtar would have been happy to advise me. We tried our best but, I haven’t really called anyone.

What made you turn producer?

My interest is really not in production but after 18 years, you like to own and be creatively on your own. A lot of money is involved and your inputs mean something else. I want to learn more about business. The market earlier was different. Most heroes have moved on and turned actor directors or producers. There are not many independent producers left to work with.

Reportedly Kareena wanted to play the lead opposite you in LAK?

None of the directors listen to me. Imtiaz felt that Deepika suited the role better.

You are working with Deepika for the first time how was it?

I think we look nice and refreshing. She’s a new face and she’s young. She’s got an Indian look and is very grounded and mature. Her personality grounds me on the screen just like Rani Mukherjee does. They are very earthy just opposite of me.

What is Love Aaj Kal about?

The story primarily is about Jai who doesn’t believe in love and is practical. He believes that long distance relationship is a pain, so why not just be friends and don’t follow your heart types. He comes across a person who tells him what love is all about. Imtiaz has made a simple love story and it is not confusing love story as most people believe.

You are playing a Sardar in the film and Akshay and Salman have played Sardars before, what is your opinion about them?

I think we are different. I have not seen Salman’s film but I saw Akshay in Singh is King and I think it was glamorous and commercial. It was cool, stagey and larger than life. It’s unfair to compare us.

Well this news surely won’t go down well with the Bengali tigress, who has been slyly written-off the new Race.

We hear Saif was so convinced about the Race magic that he went out of the way to convince the producers to hire Abbas-Mustan again as directors; applauding them for doing a wonderful job on a fast-paced thriller like Race.

Saif also shocked Bipasha by writing her off the Race sequel in favor of his girlfriend Kareena Kapoor. Saif is hoping to make Race 2 bigger and better than the original thriller and has sidelined fuming Bipasha in the name of script demand.

This is not the first time Saif has miffed a reputed actress, his current co-star in Love Aaj Kal Deepika Padukone is also left fuming at Saif who goes on raving about Kareena in all his press meets and promotions for the film. This has irked Deepika to such an extent that she is telling media on how she was the original choice for Love Aaj Kal, director Imtiaz Ali and that she was offered the role before Om Shanti Om happened. Not very professional of Chote Nawaab we say, going around B-Town putting-off leading ladies is surely very ungentlemanly.

This week Kareena plans to give her fans on a hugely popular social-networking website (Facebook) a big surprise.

Kareena plans to get on the networking site for about 30 minutes “to say hello” to her fans. She may even break her resolve not to become a member of the networking site. And who knows, she may even get over her reservations about starting her own website.

Says Kareena, “I’ve been repeatedly told that I’ve the maximum number of fans and well-wishers on Facebook. I could never find the time to connect with them. More importantly I was too shy. I can’t bring myself to answer over-specific questions on my activities, where I am, what I do, eat, etc.”

It was Saif Ali Khan and director Imtiaz Ali who informed Kareena of the massive fan following she has on Facebook and how imperative it was for her to reach out to those trying to reach out through social networking.

“I now realize it’s a whole large global community out there on the computer. I can’t blog about my life. But I need to understand and connect with the internet community. In fact, reveals Kareena, “It was Saif who introduced me to the computer. He does practically all his work on the internet. He coaxed me into understanding the basics. And then I got hooked, though not to social networking because I’m too private a person to share my day-to-day movements and activities even with my closest friends.”

It was Imtiaz Ali who pointed out the importance of reaching out on the social networking site. “Imtiaz said the number of people on Facebook who put up my pictures and messages about me had to be seen to be believed. I’ll now be going on Facebook in a few days to interact with my friends there.”

Not that Kareena wants to be regular on social networking. “That’s not me. But I respect and love the thousands of people who want to reach out to me through the internet.”

Seems like, Pritish lost the last modicum of decency after watching the brain-less flick Kambakkht Ishq. He has been telling the whole world what exactly he thinks of Kareena, and her ‘acting skills in KI’ via Twitter, he didn’t mince words as he says,” Why don’t you see what she looked like in Chameli and compare it with KI (Kambakkht Ishq). Chameli was a real woman, a beautiful woman. She was stunning. Kareena looked like a dream in those days. Today she is a joke.”

Not to be left behind Kareena spat back, “Some people have too much time to blog and talk about others so much. I don’t even have time to check my computer for my e-mails. I am constantly working that just goes to show that I am more focused on my career.”

From here on, it just keeps getting interesting as Pritish Nandy took major offence, and went on a rant on how he is busier than Kareena as he works 20 hours a day and still replies to all his twitter fans; he appealed his fans to defend him

Pritish a well-known producer bit back, he says,” Kareena has slammed me on front page of DNA today for my saying that she looked hot in Chameli, not in KI. Views? Despite a 20 hour day I respond to each one of you. Isn’t it time you defended Twitter and me? And yourself for being out here.”

Pritish practically ran an opinion poll on this issue, and in a most weird twist dragged Piggy Chops in the scene

Yanking Piggy Chops into the catfight, Pritish says via Twitter,”Kareena claims those on Twitter (read me, Priyanka Chopra) have no work. So they pass comments on others? You agree with her? Kareena busier than me?”

Now that’s a smart move.

Pritish was caught foot-in-mouth calling Kareena a joke; now he is dragging Piggy Chops to fuel a cat-fight to save himself, like a true politician.

“That’s true,” admits Saif. “For me my film and Bebo’s are equally important. In fact, if there were a choice I’d rather have her film work than mine. God willing, both films will be hits. And we’ll have a double celebration.”

Saif is openly appreciative of Kareena’s on-screen bonding with Akshay. “Akshay is a great guy. I’ve had a great time working with him in many films like Main Khiladi Tu Anari and Tashan. In Tashan all three of us, Bebo, Akshay and I had great fun. He’s one co-star both Bebo and I like.”

There was therefore no awkwardness at all regarding the kissing scenes between Akshay and Kareena. “They are more funny than titillating,” grins Saif.

Says Saif, “I loved the film. Bebo and Akki look their career best. I think the film is great fun! I’d love to see it again. I think it is going to be a huge hit. And oh yes, my kids loved it too.”

Saif and his two children Sarah and Ebrahim saw Kareena’s Kambhakkt Ishq on Tuesday night and they were bowled over.

Sarah and Ebrahim are hugely fond of Kareena, and fans of her films. The bonding between Kareena and the two children is very easy to see.

Says Kareena, “Oh Sarah and Ebrahim loved the film. Unfortunately my sister and my father are out of country and couldn’t attend screening. I can’t wait for them, to see the KI.”

Saif tried to keep her spirits up. But Kareena was undoubtedly missing her father. Of late Kareena has been bonding big time with her father. She has been keeping a tab on him by calling and inquiring about his diet and health, and visiting him as much as possible. And when Randhir Kapoor signed two films lately, his younger daughter was the happiest.

“He needs to work. He must work. He’s such a talented actor. I’ve inherited my comic timing from my father, which you can see in Kambakkht Ishq. I know he’d love me in this film,” says an emotional Kareena.

Randhir Kapoor is currently on a cruise holiday in Lisbon.

But in Rensil d’Silva’s film, which he insists on calling Jehad, Saif finally gets up-close and personal with the love of his life.

Says Saif, “It’s a love story; a very passionate story, with a relevant and disturbing theme. And yes, there’re kissing scenes. See, Rensil is shooting a very real and contemporary film. We can’t have flowers touching one another to show intimacy. At the same time we wouldn’t do anything that would make us squirm while watching the film with our parents. So, there’re scenes of kissing and intimacy which have been done tastefully and within the limits of decorum.”

Saif says he had to be constantly conscious of the fact that it was the woman he loved; to whom, he was making love to on screen.

“Obviously having her as my co-star made it easier to be intimate. And it would be the easiest thing in the world for me to say I’ve done intimate scenes with other co-stars and doing them with Kareena was the same. But that won’t be true. Having her with me made me feel more responsible. I didn’t want to end showing off my relationship by accentuating the intimacy. So it was a double-edged sword. At the end of the day we’re all actors. But this was different. If we had to do the same scenes with other co-stars we may not have been as comfortable. Yes. Definitely I was more comfortable sharing intimacy with Kareena on screen than I was with other actors. ”

Considering the film belongs more to Saif, is he happy to see Kareena take the backseat? “It’s hard to say whose film it is. It’s her movie as much as mine. Hers’ is a great role with great dramatic potential.”

Now having completed Rensil’s film Saif and Kareena are off on their mysterious holiday. “We’re flying out of New York this week, stopping over at London, a city we both love for a few days and then we’re in Italy for our holiday. …Yeah one likes to be a bit private about the holidays. But then in this day age nothing is private. And I’m not Johnny Depp to have stalkers following me to my holiday. I don’t think Indians fans are that obsessive. And if some Indian fan follows us to Italy he should be applauded for his resilience.”

Meanwhile other aspiring actresses, who could possibly have been following her footsteps, have taken a step back as well. Even Aarti Chabaria, who has been looking at making her presence, felt in Bollywood once again with her upcoming film TOSS confesses that being Size Zero is hardly ‘cool’ and she would carry on with the shape that suits her most.

“I am quite happy about the way I am and love the way I am shaped. Blame it on my North Indian genes but I have no intentions to get that flesh off myself”, says Aarti who had started off her career with a bang with one of her earlier projects being AWARA PAAGALA DEEWANA opposite none other than Akshay Kumar.

“Honestly speaking, I entered the industry when I was very young so I don’t think that I have missed out on the years. Yes, my looks have changed over the years and I am only happy about that because I guess I am only looking better”, smiles Aarti.

And what kind of fitness regime does she follow? “Well, I keep a normal gym schedule and love kicking and squatting.”

Feeling sexy is something that she believes is more of an inner trait.

“Having body beautiful is great but what matters most is if you are feeling sexy from inside. If that’s really the case then others will find it out by themselves; you won’t have to make an extra effort”, she signs off.

Viraj (Akshay) is a Hollywood stunt man who doesn’t believe in marriage and lives by the belief that women are good for only two things. When he comes to know that his younger brother Lucky (Aftab) is getting married, he rushes to break it off. At the same time the bride, Kamini’s (Amrita) best friend Simrita (Kareena) too rushes in dissuading her from getting married to a ‘second hand’ person aka a stuntman.

But it is too late as the couple has already made up their mind. But not before a war of words ensues between the chauvinist Viraj and snooty Simrita. The reason why Simrita (who by the way is a medical student cum part time model) hates men is the examples she has seen in her own family. She therefore believes men are only interested in taking women into their beds and nothing else.

But then fate keeps Viraj and Simrita bumping more into each other and their each meeting only doubling up their hate for each other. Meanwhile, Simrita’s stubbornness leads Lucky and Kamini to the brink of divorce. While Viraj tries to stop this divorce from taking place Simrita tries her best to ensure it takes place. Things get more complicated when during Viraj’s operation, Simrita accidentally leaves her watch inside his stomach. What it all leads to forms the rest of the plot.

Kambakkht Ishq is one of the most lavish productions to come out of Bollywood no doubts about it. But despite involving four scriptwriters the film still falls short of the expectations where the promised wholesome entertainment is concerned. The main problem being the wafer thin plot, then again some really bad jokes that fall flat and finally the second half. Also many a times the thin line of acceptance has been crossed in the name of humour which makes it a difficult watch for the family audience.

The first half breezes quickly but the second half slows down considerably. The serious turn taken though comes in with the flow of the film, it gets boring as you know it very well where it is all going to lead to. Though it is applause worthy job by debutante director Sabbir Khan to helm a film as huge, you sorely miss a David Dhawan who would have controlled the lunatic moments more effeciently.

To give due credit, ‘Hollywood’ has been well incorporated by Sabbir in the film. Though Taurus awards sequence has been superbly picturised, the makers seem to be under the impression that award winners arrive first on stage followed by announcement of arrival of award presenters at prestigious international awards.

The film scores high in the technical department with cinematographer Vikas Sivaraman coming on tops. He has succeeded in imparting the film an international look. However, barring the Mangalam number the music of the film is not worth a mention.

Akshay Kumar is back in terrific form as a performer. He is simply superb in his award acceptance speech. Kareena has never looked so hot before. She manages to put up her own against Akshay but is saddled by poor characterization, especially in the second half. Almost 80% of the time her character has been burdened with a permanent growl on the face. Amrita Arora is cute as her dim wit friend.

Aftab is passable. Kirron Kher is getting irritatingly repetitive. Boman Irani in a single scene appearance is hilarious but Javed Jaffrey grates on your nerves and its high time he realises that his ‘punny’ jokes don’t work every time. Vindoo Dara Singh as the dumb assist of Akshay is mirthful. Amongst the Hollywood stars, Sylvester Stallone commands great screen presence but Denise Richards looks too old but she does enact her part well.

Watching the promos and the huge hype the makers have managed to create about their film, your expectation levels are high when you enter but as you come out you do feel that it is nothing more than a dumb entertainer that tries to take you too much for granted. It may take a great start at the box office but the crowds will vanish from Monday once the hype begins to settles down.

What is your role in the film?
I play a part time super model Simrita Rai, who works for a surgeon in the film. Simrita is against love. She is arrogant firebrand who is more than able to stare down the most arrogant male with her caustic wit and sardonic tongue, with her firm belief that there is no such thing as love. In short, Simrita is what every woman dreams of being.

What is the USP of Kambakkt Ishq?
The film has not only the biggest Bollywood stars like Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor but it also the biggest Hollywood stars, like Sylvester Stallone, Brandon Routh and Denise Richards.

What does the film set out to explore?
Kambakkt Ishq sets out to explore the relationship between two individuals like Viraj Shergill, played by Akshay Kumar and Simrita Rai, played by me, who are as different from each other as chalk and cheese. No matter how many times we are pushed together, there are only fireworks.

Why do you think Kambakkt Ishq is a style statement?
Everything in Kambakkth Ishq is a style statement . You can describe the film as a battle between the sexes.Though it is a hardcore commercial film, I consciously chose non-filmi clothes. Aki Narula has sourced my clothes from Milan. It took him 15 days to find the right kind of clothes for me. I wanted the costumes to sync well with my character. After Jab We Met where my clothes became a national rage, Kambakkth Ishq is going to set new trends.

Would you agree that it is Jab We Met directed by Imtiaz Ali which has been the turning point of your career as an actress?
I should say with due respect to the directors of my films like Omkara and Chameli that though they were special films, it was Jab We Met alone which fit me like a glove and I’d have been disappointed a lot if the film had not fetched me awards for acting.

Which are your other films besides Kambakkt Ishq which are being lined up for release this year?
Salman Khan’s home production directed by Prem Soni called My Aur Mrs Khanna, Karan Johar’s film with me and Saif and last but not the least Roomi Jaffrey’s film with me and John Abraham. I am also acting in Rajkumar Hirani’s Three Idiots in which I have been teamed opposite Aamir Khan.

Is it true that you are doing two films with Saif?
Yes. I am gung ho about doing two films with Saif. I have signed a film with Saif for director Renzel D’Sylva for Karan Johar. It is called Qurban.It is quite a hard hitting role as far as I am concerned. I look forward to doing that film as well as Saif’s own film Agent Vinod with Saif, after Tashan. Besides this film, I am also all set to do a film with John Abraham as my leading man for Asthavinayak, which is a very nice love story to be shot in the exotic locales of both New Zealand and Spain.

Which are your two major wishes that are yet to be fulfilled?
I would love to work with Rajkumar Santoshi and Rakesh Roshan, who are the only two major directors with whom I have yet not done any film till date.

Are you aiming at Hollywood as your next destination?
I do not want to waste my money on a Hollywood agent. I’d rather go on a long holiday abroad than waste my time and energy and money on trying to make it in Hollywood.

Do you have reservations about doing different genres of films?
As an actress, I do not go just by what my secretary recommends me after listening to the script. I make it a point to listen to every script, whether it is written by an established writer or an up and coming new writer. If I had reservations, do you think would have ended up doing films like Chameli earlier which was in contrast to the kind of roles which I was doing at that point time and Jab We Met? I do not think any big actress would have agreed to do a role like the ones I did in ether Chameli or Jab We Met.

Describing your journey in films from Refugee to Kambakkht Ishq?
The going has been great as an actress from the time I had made my debut with J.P. Dutta’s Refugee till now. I am glad that I have been privileged enough to have had opportunities to do so many roles. My journey has been great as an actress, but yet I would say that I want to achieve more. I feel that my journey has just begun and I would like to grow more.

The unit of Raj Kumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots shot at the Pangong Lake in Ladakh which is 13,900 feet above sea level.Often tourists who go up there are known to complain of breathlessness due to the lack of oxygen.

And so it was for Kareena, Aamir Khan, Madhavan and Sharman Joshi who scaled new heights of derringdo without any casualty, though many people are known to collapse for lack of oxygen at the place where Kareena, the only female member of the cast, shot.

Says Kareena, “We had little oxygen, no electricity and no hot water. On top of that I was in a wedding ghagra-choli outfit in that freezing cold, can you imagine! The wind almost swept me off my feet.”

To protect herself from the freezing cold Kareena wore thermal heating along with her outfit. “But that was of very little help. Finally the unbearable cold was all worth it for a wonderful film. The boys (Kareena means Aamir and Madhavan) were great fun. And Raju Hirani is a gem.”

And now from freezing cold Kareena has suddenly gone into the simmering heat of monsoon-less Delhi. The sharp contrast in the weather has taken its toll on Kareena’s health.

Compounding her woes is the fact that she is in Delhi in time for her sister Karisma’s birthday on June 25. But Karisma is out of the country.

“Can you believe it? My bad luck I guess,” sighs Kareena .

“For starters,” she begins as she packs for her much-awaited week-long vacation in Europe with Saif Ali Khan, “I’ll finally be moving into my new home in January. It’s just a hop and skip away from where I stay on Hill Road in Bandra. I can’t give up being close to my mom and living in Bandra.”

The home in a building called Queen will also have a new apartment for Kareena’s mother. “Of course my mother is moving with me. I can’t live breathe or take one step without my mother. The only difference is she’ll now have a separate apartment. But we’re still on the same floor.”

As for the home that Saif is preparing for the two of them, Kareena shrugs, “That won’t be ready for another two years. That’s how long it’s going to be before we get married anyway. Right now my diary is filled up till 2010. There’s no space for even a runaway marriage.”

Kareena has in fact decided to gift her mom much more than just a new home. She has made her mom a New Year promise.

“No more bikini shots for me. I mean I’m very happy with the kind of attention and adulation I got for getting into a bikini in Tashan. And I wasn’t uncomfortable wearing it. Why should I be? I’ve the physique to carry it off. But that’s it. My mother didn’t like me in a bikini. Also the kind of work that I’m doing now in 3 Idiots or Renzil d’Silva’s film doesn’t require that kind of exposure.”

With her super-star daughter being extremely busy with her career and Saif, mom Babita has a lot of time on hand.

“She now does a lot of charity work with charitable institutions like the Mount Mary Old Age Home in Bandra and other places. She’s a very giving woman. I should know. She scarificed her own career and joys to bring up my sister and me.”

Not too many people know Babita is half-Christian.

Reveals Kareena, “Her mother was a Christian and father a Sindhi. So we are as fond of the church as we’re of the temple. Christmas is a big event for us. That’s why I needed to rush home at this time from Philadelphia to be home for Christmas before taking off for my holiday.”

Surprisingly Kareena is full of praise for her supposed arch-rival Priyanka Chopra. “I don’t know why so much is made of our rivalry. We’re in totally difference spaces. She does her own films. I do mine. Whenever we meet she’s really sweet to me. I don’t understand why we’re made out to be two squabbling sirens. Please, we’re grownup women.”

As far as conducting a career goes Kareena’s role- model is Aishwarya Rai. “I love the way she carries herself and the roles she’s choosing after marriage. I’d like to follow that pattern when I get married.”

But that’s a long way off. At the moment Kareena is just happy being with Saif. “He may appear to be very volatile and undecided, just like me. But actually he takes all the right decisions on my behalf. He’s totally into his books while I love films. I keep him clued in to what’s happening in the industry.Right now we both want to see Ghajini before we leave for our holiday. We’re both Aamir fans. Ater Ghajini I think the next film Saif will see will be my 3 Idiots. And this time it won’t be for Aamir.”

Kareena is also packing some scripts for her holiday. “I’m definitely going to read some scripts and select the right films to do after 3 Idiots and Rensil’s film. I’ve to find films that justify my presence.”
