The much awaited and iconic Kala Ghoda Arts Festival came to life with a captivating and entertaining Musical evening on 3rd Feb 2013. Excited Mumbaikars showed up in unprecedented numbers and in full gusto to be a part of this enchanting evening. This year the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival revolves around a unique yet relevant theme, “change”. An amalgamation of art, music, theatre, dance, food, literature etc, the festival is a shining example of the abundant talent that our country possesses as performers, a glimpse of which all mumbaikars witnessed on the the 3rd with mesmerizing performances.

The evening kickstarted on a patriotic note as Isheeta Ganguli enthralled the audience with the legendary “Bande Mataram”. Isheetaa, a fusion singer of the indian diaspora began her musical journey at the tender age of seven and released her first Rabindrasangeet Album at the age of fifteen. Her performance at the Arts festival featured hits from her acclaimed album “Damaru”, arranged by Shantanu Moitrhra. The highly respected and coveted Shabana Azmi joined Isheetaa on stage as the guest artist to recite Tagore’s “Where the mind is without fear” as a part of Isheetaa’s opening song Bande Mataram. The presence of Shabana Azmi enhanced the beauty of the evening and was a major highlight for those present at cross maidan.

Following the marvellous performance by Isheetaa was a 90 minute electrifying and magnetic performane by PadmaShree award winner Usha Uthup who performed accompanied by her band at the opening night of the festival. Usha Uthup, a true blue Mumbaikar was nostalgic as she spoke about her growing years in Mumbai and how lucky she felt to be a part of such an iconic festival in her beautiful city. Usha Uthup had the audience swooning to her famous numbers from Dum Maro Dum and darling to other popular songs by Bappi Lahiri as well as some english classics. Usha ensured that there was not one dull moment in her 90 minute gala performance as she constantly interacted with the audience, leaving them in splits with her witty humour. They tapped their and andd sang along with the effervesent singer who looked radiant and charming as ever.

The Festival has grown exponentially, and is hugely successful, drawing over 150,000 people from all over the city to 350 events over 9 days. Tourists from all over the world plan their trip to Mumbai to witness the KalaGhoda Arts Festival. Funds raised from the festival go towards the restoration and upkeep of the area. Several heritage buildings and institutions in the area have benefited from this. It has traditionally offered various programmes in Visual Art, Music, Theater Dance, Street Acts, Heritage Walks, Literature and Workshops for children as well as adults. The USP of the KalaGhoda Arts Festival is that there is absolutely no discrimination, it is open to all and entry is free for all events, workshops, theatrical acts, etc.
