‘Titles are Irrelevant’ is Nandita’s first solo show in India and is available for a limited time at Jehangir Art Gallery.
Nandita Chaudhuri held a dazzling preview of her art show ironically titled as ‘Titles are Irrelevant’. Attended by the who’s who of the corporate, hotel, and industrial sectors, it was most certainly a memorable evening for all. Nandita’s friends, family and admirers were all present to support her, despite the the fire at the Mantralaya.
Having worked mostly in the West, she describes her current works “as a purposeful composite of the ‘progressive’, entwined with shameless ‘regression’.” Explaining this further, she adds that she is rejoicing in the warmth of Indian colors. Her western background disabled her from using bright oranges, pinks and reds. Nandita plans to work equally out of London and Mumbai having recently set up studio in Bandra.
Naturally when someone as talented as Nandita hosts her first solo show, Mumba’s elite come out to show their support. Last night saw the likes of Artee and Kailash Surendranath, Nandita Das, Raell Padamsee, Saryu Doshi, Nisha Jamwal and many more!
Speaking on the show, Nandita says, “Everything I have showcased in this show has never been done before. I have used an innovative new technology to create my art. I have just come to India and this is my first show. I am overwhelmed at the response that I have received from everyone. Almost all the people here have actually observed my paintings, as I have seen them linger on either my recycled Coke cans painting, my instillation or some other piece. I am truly spell bound.”
The talking point of the event was surely a painting made out of 200 coke cans, a classic use of waste materials that imbibed nandita’s western techniques and Indian colors! Guests were all praises for this one and more. The event was a truly inspiring night and we hope to see many more shows from Nandita. We congratulate her on successfully completing her fist solo show!
