Suneet Varma At Couture Week Fall-Winter 2008 “Enchanted Forest” 18th September, Mumbai: Suneet Varma’s Fall-Winter Couture Collection for Couture Week 2008 is an ode to William Shakespeare’s romantic, theatrical play, “A Mid-Summer Night’s Dream”.
Says Suneet, “The theme of the show is that love and beauty triumph in the end, and the pleasure of Dreaming the Impossible Dream comes true.” Elves, angels, birds and butterflies make for a theatrical and lyrical operatic presentation. A specially created enchanted forest with twinkling stars and moonlight dictates the dress code and the seduction of each of its characters.
The characters of the fairies like Titania, Queen of the fairies, with her etherealism and transparency represents the idea of the light and airy with diaphanous collection of saris, long floor length voluminous gowns and winged sleeves in shades of lilacs, grey, beige and pastel pinks. Sheer chiffons in beautiful hues of pinks, lilacs, aquas and beiges with velvet and gold lamé appliqué all of which have been generously embellished with a huge array of elements from CRYSTALLIZED™ – Swarovski Elements. As a special initiative for this collection, Suneet especially travelled to the CRYSTALLIZED™ headquarters in Wattens Austria.
The human lovers, Hermia and Helena represent youth colour and vibrancy. Textured chiffons, organza’s and nets, tie-dyed and sheared for a softer silhouette in tunics, corsets and draped skirts are part of this line. Three dimensional hand-made organza and taffeta flowers embellish this line.
Hippolyta, the legendary Amazon queen (engaged to marry Theseus in the play) brings in the stately and regal order to the forest. Golds, pewters, and coppers in metallic finishes with CRYSTALLIZED™ – Swarovski Elements bring in the sparkles of the stars on a moonlit night. Wedding dresses, rich and ornate lehengas, demure gowns and saris make up this collection.
The elements of mischief like Puck, the naughty fairy who brings in the saucy to the plot, is brought in by mischievous silhouettes of tunic dresses, ruffled shirts, quilted jackets with exaggerated collars. The colours are maroons, teals and shades of green.
Accessories are specially handcrafted headgear in silk and organza, with lyrical forest elements of twigs, stems, floral buds, bees and butterflies. There are also knee high embroidered socks as an alternative to the churidar, to be worn with tunics for a more contemporary feel. The socks have been specially created with lace appliqué and thread embroidery.
The triumph of love and return to serenity is represented by the whites and ivories which bring in the restoration of order. They are a becalming finale to a dramatic show.
Suneet Varma would also like to thank CRYSTALLIZED™ – Swarovski Elements for their ongoing support and partnership with him over the years. The bags for the show have been provided by American iconic luxury brand, Judith Leiber. The music for the show has been mixed and created by Medieval Punditz.
