A certain lack of expressions and a perplexed mind define the exact state I was in, when I sat down to write a review of Rohit Shetty’s ‘Sunday. Making up the mind to write this review and fighting the lack of words took more time than I ever thought. Now, as the name suggests the movie’s well-seasoned plot revolves around one particular ‘Sunday’. Nobody seems have any clues on the incidences that clouded that Sunday.

Rohit Shetty’s ‘Golmaal – Fun Unlimited’ was quite a successful movie and a lot more funny than ‘Sunday’, which is supposed to be a comic-romantic thriller. ‘Sunday’ stars Ayesha Takia, Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Irrfan Khan and Mukesh Tiwari ( yes, we also have a sensuous item song by a stunning Esha Deol and a super-confused Tusshar Kapoor. However, no hard feelings, but I could not digest the later in an item number!). The previous year has not been that great for the stars in this movie, and they desperately were seeking a blockbuster, however it fell flat, even though it didn’t hurt much. Ajay Devgan’s ‘Halla Bol’ and Arshad Warsi’s ‘Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal’ had failed to impress the audience and critics alike.
Ayesha Takia, Ajay Devgan in Sunday
‘Sunday’ is a remake of a Southern movie ‘Anukokunda Oka Roj’ (Telugu). Not being too harsh on the movie and plot and considering it as just another of our slapstick movies with quite an adequate dose of suspense and comedy, the movie is a good one-time watch. Rohit Shetty has definitely picked up the actors keeping in mind the characters. The characters are specifically hand-picked for this movie. They are straight out of this world we live in, be it the chirpy and talented dubbing artist, the animated and unscrupulous ACP, or the bribe-lover Haryanawi cop, the most friendly and funny cabbie, the budding actor, the suspicious friend or the mysterious character. Each one on them suit the role they play to the fullest and each has been defined with a seasoned hand, groomed with love and played with fitting liveliness. Now, a ten on ten to Rohit Shetty for this, it could not have been better and I dare say, don’t we just love the bubbly Ayesha and the smartest of cabbies, Arshad.
The plot revolves around the vivacious and cheerful dubbing artist Sehar Thapar (Ayesha Takia). She is quite in demand for she has a talent for modulating her voice to suit jungle animals and diversified cartoon characters. She is innocently forgetful and her getting up on a Monday morning to find two milk packets at her door makes her wonder, about her missing the Sunday. Personally, being bubbly comes naturally to Ayesha and Rohit exploited and let her be simple cute and charming. Had he asked for a talent in expressing emotions or to live diversified scenes, she would most probably have le him down, but it was smart move by Rohit to let her not get in choking scenes. Now, our chinky-pinky heroine wants to have a fun night out and goes to a discotheque with her friend Ritu (Anjana Sukhani), who lives in her society and evidently quite a suspicious character. The two girls try to get even with some boys at the disco and Ayesha finally ends up having wrong drinks. She walks out of the disco with the world tumbling down and finds herself at her flat a day later.
Esha Deol in Sunday
Now, when our dear cops ACP Rajvir Randhava (Ajay Devgan) and Mukesh Tiwari are busy licking ice-cream cones, there is a dead body is found floating in the local river and the clues lead to Ayesha, who seems to have forgotten what happened to her after she left the disco. Another dead body with Ayesha’s bracelet is found soon after this. Ajay is in fix whether to believe the evidences or believe his sweetheart. He is as confused as Ayesha herself. In the sequence of these events Ayesha meets Arshad aka Ballu who along with his small time actor friend Kumar aka Irrfan Khan try to scare of the lonely Ayesha one night, who in turn scares them and runs off without paying the fare. While Ballu wants his money back, Irrfan screams ‘bhoot’ every time they find her. She is also followed by mobsters who try to kill her and yet she is unable to remember about that missing Sunday of her life. Now, the movie is all about finding out what happened on that Sunday.
Ayesha Takia in Sunday
Ajay has done his part well but at certain places you feel, he should grow up from these kind of roles, we never had a doubt about his acting calibers. He is comic but not definitely without the support of Mukesh Tiwari, who delivers some catchy Haryanawi lines. Ayesha is charming and bubbly; she does exactly what is expected of her. Arshad Warsi gives a class performance. He puts life to his role and is unique at certain places. We have loved him as ‘Circuit’ and wish to see more and more of him. He proves that comedy is his cup of tea after all. He has come a long way from the cabbie Ballu in his debut movie ‘Tere Mere Sapney’. Irrfan Khan is equally comic and he doesn’t have to roll his eys or make stupid faces but just needs to say his dialogues in his own manner and make the audience fall into peels of laughter.
We have already seen multi-starer films, now is the trend to have multiple music composers. This movie has some good foot-tapping numbers. My special favorite is the title song ‘Missing Sunday’.
Ajay Devgan in Sunday
Over all, a good movie to go for, if you just want to have some most wanted doses of laughter. The comedy and suspense gel well and even though you get slightly confused in the beginning, the second part would reveal all to you. Rohit Shetty has again come up with a light well-made entertainer, a yummy snacky if not a well-cooked dinner. So, put your spyglasses on and get ready to solve the mystery!
