Plenty of women-centric subjects unexplored: Bramma

National award-winning filmmaker Bramma believes there are plenty of yet-to-be explored women-centric subjects that deserve to be told and one such story is his upcoming Jyothika-starrer Tamil drama “Magalir Mattum”.

“There are a lot of things about women that need to be spoken about. Women-centric subjects, in general, still remain unexplored and my film is an attempt to fill the vacuum. While it’s not an out-and-out women’s film but it does feature them in very strong characters,” Bramma told IANS.

The film, which is produced by actor Suriya, also features Bhanupriya, Saranya Ponvannan and Urvashi in supporting roles.

Although it’s a story about a few women, the director clarifies it’s an equally important story about men.

“My film also stars actors such as Nassar, Livingston and Paval Navageethan in pivotal roles. While the spotlight will fall on the women, men do play a crucial part in taking the story forward,” he said adding that a large portion of the film has already been completed.

Talking about working with Jyothika, Bramma said she plays a post-modernistic character called Prabha.

“She’s very sincere and disciplined. Despite her popularity, she doesn’t take things and people for granted. She is always the first person to reach the sets and there have been occasions where we have made her wait for a shot,” he said.

The film’s second poster featuring Jyothika riding a Royal Enfield bike has caught everybody’s attention.

Asked if he considers her to be his hero in the film, Bramma said, “I don’t like this taboo that women can’t do certain things. By making her ride a bike in the film, we’ve broken that myth.”
