Rudranil Ghosh And Kanchan Mullick Lament The Lack Of Comedy In Bengal

Published on

December 24, 2010 : Bengali television and film actors Rudranil Ghosh and Kanchan Mullick are celebrated artists, but does a filmmaker really keep the two actors in mind while working on a project? In a statement to the media, Rudranil Ghosh and Kanchan Mullick say that the Bengali film industry is reluctant to make a film that will understand the true potential of a comedian, rather they want to make use of the comic actors as mere buffoons to give the audience a relief from the serious content.

However this was not the case in the times of stalwart filmmakers like Satyajit Ray, a man whom Bengali filmmakers worship as their inspiration. Rudranil Ghosh reminds us of how Satyajit Ray put to use the talents of comedians like Rabi Ghose and Santosh Dutta, who were not regarded as the supporting cast but shared equal screen space with the lead actor in his films. Cut to the late 19th and 20th centuries, filmmakers are more interested in cinema which features heroes and heroines singing and dancing around trees .

Kanchan Mullick on the other hand is dissatisfied with the kind of projects being offered to him. He is aware of the fact that the films he is a part of , do not justify his true potential. The actor remembers days when only the fish sellers in the market close to his home watched his films! Over the past few months, there has been a change of profile in the audience of Kanchan Mullick’s films, but he is still on the search of a film where the comedian will be projected as the chief character.

Both Rudranil Ghosh and Kanchan Mullick are of the opinion that it is high time that comedians were nominated in the category of the Best Actor in the various award events that take place round the year.
