Apne Movie Review: Family Bonding

Published on

When I first heard about the movie Apne being made with the Deol boys, I thought it would be another thrash-crash-boom film and a total waste of time and money. Dharmendra is old and gone. Though he did a good job in Metro, it is pretty hard to get a good role at his age. Sunny Deol only makes a fool of himself with movies like Fool and Final, Jo Bole So Nihaal and so on. Bobby, well, after a very dry patch, he must be eagerly awaiting the reviews for Jhoom Barabar Jhoom and Apne. So all in all, the whole hype of having the Deol men in the same film would be about it.

Only after I saw the film did I backtrack and take my words back because this film is not an action thing. In fact, it speaks about a lot of things like family bonding, frustration, emotions and honor. The film is about Baldev Choudhary (Dharmendra), who is a boxer and wins a silver medal in the Olympics for the same. He could not have been happier, but then a dark cloud descends upon him and he is falsely accused of using drugs and is banned from boxing. Unable to deal with this, he becomes a boxing coach and harbors the burning desire for his elder son Angad (Sunny Deol) to redeem his honor. He plans out his son’s life, but the son has his own dreams. Baldev’s second son Karan (Bobby Deol) is medically unfit to become a boxer and is a musician. The tension in their house escalates to an alarming degree, but soon the sons realize how much this means to their father and they both set their lives on hold to do something for someone they truly love.

Though the movie revolves around boxing, it is only in the background. What takes centre stage is the bonding between the father and sons. In retrospect, I can’t think of a better way to do it than take a family for the concerned roles because it is very obvious that the Deols brought something from their personal lives into the film. The camaraderie between them is real and palpable. Also, Dharmendra has totally shown the world that he is still the wonderful actor who graced the silver screen in the past. He does great job as the ego centric father and coach who is obsessed with retribution, so much so that he does not care if that is not what his sons want. The transition from that to a vulnerable, hurt and understanding father has been done so beautifully, it makes you cry. Sunny Deol too has done a great job with this film and traces of a good hero still lurk within him. Bobby’s character is underplayed, but nevertheless, he does a great job and gets it bang on. The women in the film are completely sidelined, but I think that was expected.

Anil Sharma deserves a pat on the back for doing so much of justice to a good script. Everything seems just right – especially the Deols because when you watch them together, you can feel the love flowing. I definitely recommend this feel good film.
