TV Trend 2010: Daily Soaps With The Good ‘Saas’ & Rebellious ‘Bahu’ Syndrome

Published on

December 16, 2010 : Daily Soaps on Indian television are fast becoming a sore on the head for its viewers. The underlying factor in most of these serials are stressing on the good saas or mother in law and the vicious or rebellious bahu or the daughter in law syndrome.

Taking a few serials like Mera Naam Karegi Roshan, Dil Se Diya Vachchan, Bidaai, Mann Ki Pratigya, Saath Nibhana Saathiya, Tera Mujhse Hai Pehle Ka Nata Koi, Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Sasural Genda Phool etc. all have their storylines changing and at some point the essence of the modern young woman does crop up, thereby giving a message that the daughter in law can no longer be taken for granted and even she has a mind of her own.

Suddenly the shift in image of the battered daughter-in-law has been visible as she is now with the upper hand and the mom in law is the one who gets to make most of the sacrifices and compromises.

Gone are the days when it was the daughter in law who had to make adjustments at her in laws house as it was she who was the new entrant into the family. Modern times have got the entire scenario changed. These days it is the daughter in law who gets to call the shots at her husband’s house.

Well with daily soaps getting into such melodramatic storylines, one wonders whether these are real life experiences of some of the writers and their acquaintances or just a figment of their imagination where the broad minded ‘bahu’ dominates every aspect of the new home she’s entered.
