Washington, Feb 23 (ANI): Researchers from Duke University Medical Centre have found certain vital clues to healing arthritis caused by traumatic injury. They have identified a strain in laboratory mice that has “superhealing” powers, which can help resist inflammation after a knee injury, and avoid developing arthritis at the injury site in the long term. New ultrasound device may revolutionise osteoporosis diagnosis

Washington, February 20 (ANI): Scientists in America have come up with a new form of ultrasound that may lead to early prediction of bone loss, a hallmark of osteoporosis. Dr. Yi-Xian Qin, Director of the Orthopaedic Bioengineering Research Laboratory at Stony Brook University, has revealed that the new technology, called Scanning Confocal Acoustic Navigation (SCAN), works by assessing multiple parameters of hard tissue like bone. Osteoblast cell injections may speed up fracture healing

Washington, Feb 12 (ANI): Osteoblast cell obtained from a patient’’s own bone marrow can help quicken the healing of a long bone fracture, according to a new study. Dr Seok-Jung Kim from the Catholic University College of Medicine, Seoul, involved 64 patients in their study, of which 31 were given the ‘Osteoblast’ treatment and 33 left to recover the normal way. Bone marrow cells could help heal nerves in diabetics

Washington Feb 5 (ANI): In a novel study, researchers from Emory University were able to successfully restore nerve function in diabetic mice by bone marrow cells transplantation. The team revealed that transplanting cells that replenish blood vessels could restore nerve function in an animal model of diabetic neuropathy. (more…)

Gene therapy proves beneficial for patients with rheumatoid arthritis

Washington, Jan 27 (ANI): German scientists have found evidence that gene therapy reduces symptoms in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The study led by an investigator at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) was conducted on two patients with severe rheumatoid arthritis. Originally conceived as a means of treating genetic diseases, such as cystic fibrosis and hemophilia, gene therapy involves implanting a normal gene to compensate for a defective gene in the patient. Astronauts in space lose greater rate of bone strength than previously believed

Washington, Jan 27 (ANI): A study has found that astronauts spending months in space lose greater rate of bone strength than previously believed, making them increasingly at risk for fractures later in life. The study, which was led by researchers at UC (University of California) Irvine and UC San Francisco, evaluated 13 astronauts who spent four to six months on the International Space Station and found that, on average, astronauts’ hipbone strength decreased 14 percent. Chinese bone inscriptions discovered to be 1000 yrs older than previous finding

New Delhi, Jan 26 (ANI): Recently discovered bone inscriptions in a province in China have been analyzed to be approximately 1000 years older than those found in another area in the country, which indicates the new finding to be the oldest record of Chinese language. The Changle inscriptions were found in Weifang city of Shandong Province in China. (more…)
