Red wine can help improve cardio-vascular health

The old tradition of toasting someone’s health with wine has some truth in it. a new study shows that a natural compound called resveratrol, which is mostly found in certain red wines has the ability to trick the body into believing that it has relatively less calories. This might prove equivalent to taking low calorie diets.

The online, open-access journal Public Library of Science One (PLoS One) suggests that a research has shown that low doses of resveratrol not only slowed the aging process but also improved overall heart health in middle-aged mice. It was similar to way the low-calorie diet works by reducing about 20 to 30 percent of calories and by providing a healthy and prolonged life.

Contradictory to the previous researches that only higher does of resveratrol which could only be accumulated by drinking more red wine, the new study shows that resveratrol is active in lower doses as well. So, red wine taken with a high-fat, high-calorie diet can actually lead to a reduced calorie intake.

Professor Richard Weindruch, University of Wisconsin-Madison, professor of medicine and a researcher, William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital opines that the research now suggests that intake of lower doses of resveratrol like a pill per day can work towards better cardiac health. It will supplement enough resveratrol to improve one’s health life. In terms of red wine, one or two glasses of Red Wine can help one protect against heart diseases but increased intake can be harmful by increasing the levels of triglycerides.

Though the mice which were supplemented with resveratrol showed less chances of developing a cancer and cardio-vascular diseases, this however doesn’t rule out the fact that anything can replace the importance of regular nutritious food and exercises for a better living.
