Year One
Year One, the film seems a mistake for a director Harold Ramis. This is a joylessly funny movie punctuated with uncanny comedy. The film starring Jack Black and Michael Cera leave us a feeling to be the worst pair.
The films’ trailers were carefully avoided by me but what I could not restrict myself seeing was the banners and the posters. The ads on the posters say Meet Your Ancestors with the picture of Jack Black and Michael Cera and one would assume it to be pair of Adam and Eve (Aargh, all our imagination!).
Cera has that long locks of tresses carefully falling over and his delicate features will lead you to mistake of assuming him to be a woman. The film tried to portray him as a primordial man. Michael Cera and Jack Black, then eat the forbidden apple and is transformed from primitive gatherers and hunters to security guards (royal).
Jack Black seems to have forgotten to act as he simply reads out the lines without any action or expression. Cera on the other hand seems absolutely uncertain about his role and reflected no confidence and oneness with the character. The other leading role in ‘Year One’ is that played by Oliver Platt. The role portrayed by Oliver Platt is a hairy priest and in one of the scenes Cera was ordered to massage oil on Platt’s hairy chest. An unassuming shot and unappetizing appeal, this is what the film is all about.
Year One is essayed in the settings of Israel. The film focuses on the rescue mission of the women who were sold to Romans as slaves. The film appears to have been very loosely made and casually directed. In an attempt to bring God to the people and in a spree to connect with masses, the film had failed desperately.
You can simply keep on laughing seeing the movie but if you ask me the reason as to why I am laughing I don’t have one. It’s a movie that will simply get whitewashed from your memory as you step out of the theater and there is incoherent inconsistency in the last part of the film and you will wonder as to what is happening.
I still wonder as how Year One happened with one of the finest man in the movie industry-Harold Ramis. He might have his own arguments but I still don’t know why this picture was produced at all. However, in an attempt to explain why it has been produced I feel that Ramis who is one of the top three writers must have read the lines himself and laughed hilariously by his own expressions.
With nothing memorable, Year One is a pointless venture and a terribly sloppy film. If you are getting bored in the weekend and want to watch this film in the theaters think twice, may be not a choice for you. The film is rated PG 13 for the crude and sexual content all through with some comic violence and strong language.
