The Proposal

The Proposal movie is one that we have seen over and over. It recycles the same storyline about a man and woman who begin acquaintance hating each other but who eventually turn out to be truly deeply and madly in love with each other. On a similar tone, I began to watch the film, hating it and eventually landed up liking it.

Directed by Anne Fletcher, The Proposal is cheerfully presented and you will not mind watching the whole film with undying curiosity and as the movie ends, you don’t duck out, instead enjoy getting hit by smashes of fun and frolic all over.

The story unfolds with Margaret (Sandra Bullock) being hysterical at every instant at her workplace. She is always on a high temper, firing people who dares to take her job and she is better branded as a tyrannical witch in her office. She is basically a Canadian and lives with a constant fear that she will soon be deported.

However, she realizes that if she marries she will get a green card and therefore a permanent license to settle in Manhattan. It is then that Margaret orders Andrews, her office assistant to get married to her. Then there begin the pre-nuptial negotiations between them and finally they together fly to Sitka, Alaska to meet Andrew’s folks.

Sitka portrayed a place of sheer beauty, fragrance and natural wellness center. This waterfront town flushes out nerve-wrecking tension and stress that’s a part of the fast-paced cities. There are no skyscrapers no fast food joints and you will not see people hurrying and scurrying to and fro the office pushing themselves hard. It’s a place where you can feel the warmth of a charming location and breathe fresh air.

I was flinching to find that how a couple’s relationship that had begun with sheer incompatibility factors transforms into liking each other. Margaret will be simply taken aback and bowled over by the bond and warmth of Andrew’s family members. She did also falls in love with the local settings and was moved by the spirit of togetherness among the people there.

The Proposal

Slowly, the flower of love blooms and both Margaret and Andrew unbelievingly begin to get closer and closer to each other. Sandra Bullock powered a great performance after her stint in Speed2: Cruise Control. She exuded confidence in her role and all seemed real.

The film is again packed with some brilliant performance by Andrew’s mother Mary Steenburgen, grandmother Betty White and father Craig T. Nelson. In one of the shots it was seen that Betty White was trying to fit her wedding gown on Sandra Bullock as a tradition of passing it down as family heirloom. And, when Margaret sees herself in the mirror with that gown of grandmother-in law’s she herself was moved to see her transformation, from office witch to an emotional bride to be.

In my honest opinion I did feel that Sandra Bullock was not very much fitting to the role of office witch and she was in no comparison to Meryl Streep’s work in a similar kind of role in The Devil Wears Prada.

However, the film is worth watching even though it is rated PG13 for the content on sexuality and mild nudity.
