Sunday, November 8th, 2009

The movie Disney’s A Christmas Carol is animation treat this season and writer director Robert Zemeckis has yet again proved his skill to make a 3D movie with precision.

The Oscar-wining director has been successful in evolving animated characters that look so close to humans and this is where Zemeckis technical craftsmanship makes such a huge difference. The fact that the animated characters are so similar to real human characters makes it more believable. Robert Zemeckis has beautifully adapted Charles Dickens’ timeless classic A Christmas Carol into a well-directed animation. (more…)

Astro Boy is yet another animated movie and a family-friendly flick directed by David Bowers. This movie is based on Osamu Tezuka’s Japanese comic book. As the name suggests the hero of the film is the Astro Boy, a robotic boy that first appeared in the 1950s as an important part in the Japanese serial and then one would have caught a glimpse of Astro Boy in small screen cartoons in the 60s and now you can find Astro Boy in the silver screen. So, Astro Boy is quite familiar with arcs and spotlight. (more…)

Cloudy with a chance of meatballs is 3-D animated comedy movie that is based on Judi Barrett’s popular kids story of the 1978. It’s a well-paced fun movie, and scores well in terms of picture quality with the latest 3-D imaging software from Sony; it certainly wasn’t a disappointer. (more…)

9

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

Directed by Shane Acker, the film 9 is the latest animated flick but if you thought it’s for your kids you are mistaken absolutely. In fact, the target audience for ‘9’ is the growing teens, but to me it seemed to play more with maturing crowd that would appreciate detailed work of art, set designs and animation. (more…)

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

This latest flick Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaur is conceived from a story by Jason Carter Eaton and is directed by Carlos Saldanha who was the writer and the co-director of the 2002 film Ice Age: The Meltdown. This animated feature film uses the concept and technique of 3-D presentation and also comes with a technology that allow any and all shots to take place anywhere from beneath the sea to the soil in Mars.

Film: Dawn of the Dinosaurs
Manny: Ray Romano as Manny, John Lequizamo as Sid, Denis Leary as Diego, Simon Pegg as Buck, Queen Latifah as Ellie, Josh Peck as Eddie
Director: Carlos Saldanha
Screenplay: Michael Burg
Rating: 3.5/5

It can be multiple of lands where dinosaurs still roam about freely or a place where we land up in another planet in the future. However, the particular land in the film resembles primeval jungle where the wilderness means waterfalls and lava falls. There is indirect lighting in this particular land and that sustains lush green vegetation.

With all friends back and together, the film is fun for the little ones. Scrat is there while Mammy Ellie waits to give birth and Diego is wondering whether he has got too soft and check out why Sid gets into trouble. There are some new characters in this Ice Age and that is ferocious T Rex and a rival for Scrat, the squirrel. The rival is Scratte, a saber-toothed squirrel. In this movie it is Sid and Sloth shown adopting three dinosaur eggs with a plan to raise the little babies. The land where they all stay together is named Pellucidar.

As the film proceeds we see the mother dinosaur come looking for her babies. She grabs her hatchlings and Sid as well and disappears under the surface and towards weird cluster of volcanoes. Now all the friends together give a chase with a united spirit. The mammoths Manny and Ellie, Diego the tiger who is saber-toothed and the possums Crash and Eddie began the chase. They also team up with Buck, the Weasel in the quest of the white Dinosaur. In Buck you will find an eye patch instead of a peg leg.

It is in the film of Ice Age you would find that tigers have also learnt to co-exist with so varied species. The chasing scenes encompass everything from dizzying falls to some very close shaves catapulting into sky. These shots are interesting unlike the monotonous chase scenes.

ice-age-dawn-of-the-dinosaurs-450The film has created much less distracting, imaginary and superfluous dimension. The movie can also be nicely seen in 2-D and you can save few bucks as well. However if the children are taken to Carlos Saldanha’s film, then teachers should be prepared to answer weird questions that did dinosaurs really live in hothouse under glaciers and why Diego, the saber-toothed tiger is depressed?

Whatever be it, it is a solid 90 minutes of entertainment for the kids. And, Ice Age-Dawn of the Dinosaur is a massive improvement over its predecessor and is the best of the three films.

Up

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Up is a wonderful animation film from Pixar with characters that reflected poignancy and human like emotions. The central characters of the film are an oldie couple and a nervy kid. It is not necessary that to appeal the younger generation the characters need to be youthful. This is the beauty of the director of this film Pete Docter. (more…)
