Moscow, Sep 13 (RIA Novosti) Russia has hiked its defence spending for 2009 to 1.2 trillion roubles ($46.8 billion), a top ranking government official has said. The spending is outlined in the budget for 2009-2011 which is due to be tabled in the lower house of parliament, the State Duma, Sep 19. (more…)

New Delhi, Sep 13 (IANS) Farmers on a sit-in here for the past six months seeking enhanced compensation for land acquired by the Delhi government Saturday threatened to intensify their agitation. The current market price of the land is over 15 times what they were offered in 2005, they say. (more…)

Rio de Janeiro, Sep 13 (Xinhua) Brazil has plans to build up to 60 nuclear plants of 1,000 mw each over the next 50 years. “The general idea is to build one plant per year,” Mines and Energy Minister Edison Lobao said Friday during a visit to the country’s third nuclear power plant, Angra 3 now under construction. Vienna, Sep 13 (DPA) The UN nuclear agency has raised its long-term projections for nuclear power growth, as countries are seeking stable energy prices and energy security. Global nuclear electricity production capacity will rise to between 473 and 748 gigawatts in 2030, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has noted in its latest annual outlook on nuclear power.
