Paramilitary trooper shot dead in Srinagar

Srinagar, Sep 13 (IANS) Suspected militants shot dead a paramilitary trooper in this summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir Saturday, police sources said. The trooper was gunned down in the old city area of Safa Kadal in the afternoon, the sources added.

According to the sources, unidentified militants opened fire from a close range at a trooper of Central Reserve Police Force in troubled Srinagar, which has been rocked by violent pro-freedom protests for the last two months.

More than 50 people have been killed, mostly in police and paramilitary firing, during the bitter stir over the Amarnath land dispute.

This is the first case of militant initiated violence during the last three months. The guerrillas, who have been fighting in Kashmir since the two decade old Pakistan sponsored insurgency started in 1989, were silenct during the stir against the land row, which has renewed secessionist sentiments in the valley.

40 militants, two soldiers killed in Pakistan’s tribal region

Islamabad, Sep 13 (DPA) Clashes in Pakistan’s lawless tribal areas along the Afghan border have left at least 40 rebels and two soldiers dead, officials said. Thousands of troops - backed by gunship helicopters, tanks and artillery fire - Friday targeted several militant position in the Tang Khata, Rashkai and Khazana areas of Bajaur tribal district, a known sanctuary of Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters, who launch cross-border attacks on the US-led international forces in Afghanistan. ‘Terrorism takes backseat to economy in US’

Los Angeles, Sep 13 (Xinhua) Americans have shifted the focus of their attention from terrorism to economy seven years after the terror attack Sep 11, 2001, according to an expert.
While terrorism was identified by nearly half of the Americans after the Sep 11 attacks as the nation’s leading problem, the issue has been gradually slipping ever since, resurging only slightly after each new attack overseas or a fresh terror alert at home before fading away again, says Larry Beutler, director of the National Center on Disaster Psychology and Terrorism in Palo Alto.
