Very large population pressure in India and no sustainable method of disposing human excreta is the main reason for excessive Coliform bacteria level in our river bodies. The situation is affecting the entire marine life, fish and food chain connected with our river bodies. Spread of disease like cancer is assuming epidemic proportions in India. These can not be stopped by the present strategies of installing STPs. Our knowledge institutions like IITs and engineering colleges should wake up to their community responsibilities by providing technical solutions to locally best sustainable methods to deal with Human waste and excreta, and prevent it from going in to our rivers. Let us not waste our energies by absolving local bodies of their responsibilities of not dealing with sewer more responsibly.
