‘Mughal-e-Azam’ can’t be remade, says Randhir Kapoor

Actor-director Randhir Kapoor thinks no one can make a remake of magnum opus “Mughal-e-Azam”, as it be difficult to find actors to step into the shoes of late Madhubala and Prithviraj Kapoor, and legendary actor Dilip Kumar.

Randhir, who attended the premiere of Broadway-styled musical play of “Mughal-e-Azam” here on Friday, said the K. Asif directorial was a “great” film.

Refusing to entertain the possibility of a remake of the 1960-released film, Randhir said: “How will you bring Madhubala, Dilip Kumar or ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ Prithviraj Kapoor’

“It was a great film. I am very glad for being associated with this classic film through my grandfather Prithviraj Kapoor.”

Filmmaker-stage director Feroz Abbas Khan has adapted the 1960 film into a play.

“I am very happy that a stage version of ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ has been made. I am hoping the presentation will be glorious as it was in the film. I wish them all the best on behalf of my family and my grandfather Prithviraj Kapoor,” Randhir said.

Also present at the venue was Randhir’s younger brother Rishi Kapoor, who said: “I want to relive the memories of my grandfather through this play”.

Other Bollywood celebrities who graced the red carpet of the premiere included Jackky Bhagnani, Jackie Shroff, Nandita Das, Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi , Boney Kapoor, Sridevi and Irrfan Khan.

Feroz Abbas Khan is directing the play, which is a tribute to the original film and is being produced on a grand scale.
