November 20, 2010 : Director Quashik Mukherjee, who is popularly known as Q, has taken a very bold and risky step by making film titled ‘Gandu’, which itself is a dirty word. The online trailers of the movie suggest that it will have to undergo a tough scaling sequence to get a clearance from the Censor Board.
This Bengali flick has already been invited to be screened at the 7th South Asian International Film Festival in New York. But, for the Indian viewers, it is going to be a real tough job to watch the uncut movie legally. The movie has dared to show the full-frontal sex scenes, thus making it the first Indian film to do so.
It’s totally an expletive movie that involves lots of petty crime, Bengali rap music and explicit sexual scenes. The director claims that the movie is showing the real picture of the current society. It’s going to be the first Bengali movie showcasing a strong issue.
Director Q asks why we still feel so shy about sexuality when it is part of the practical life. He said that he chose the name ‘Gandu’ for his central protagonist not because of its dirtiness but because it plays a great role in the construction of the narrative. His lead character is not a rap star and he is not even aware of how good or bad he is.
However, we will have to wait to watch if Censor Board allows the movie to go with its real contents or it gets axed!
