It seems kind of ironic that the makers of this film decided to call it Awarapan when it is about how a man’s conscience brings him back from the brink. But then again, maybe there is a whole double entendre to the title; it is supposed to be ironic. What ever said and done, this movie does the talking and is a coup of sorts for the Bhatt camp.

We all know that this particular uh, clan has been facing some problems. Their films are always bold and most of the times this has something to do with adultery and sex. Awarapan is not too different – it also is connected with adultery, affairs, trafficking and the likes. But this film has something different – that is class. Even though the matter being dealt with can be misconstrued and made cheap very easily, Mohit Suri has handled it in a mature and sophisticated manner.
The film revolves around Shivam (Emraan Hashmi), who is the right arm of an under world don (Ashutosh Rana). This is one guy who has no spirit left in him. He just blindly does his boss’s bidding and does not let matters of sympathy come in the way. He is then assigned to spy on the boss’s girl (Mrinalini Sharma). This poor girl is like a captive and was sold to the don. As Shivam meets the girl and interacts with her, he is reminded of his past life and love- Aaliya (Shreya Saran). He was a different guy then and almost gave up his life of crime to lead a normal and happy life with his lady love, but the girl’s father did not approve at all and it was a disaster. This made Shivam into the killing machine that he was. Unfortunately, the don comes to know that his girl is having an affair on the sly and orders his henchman to kill her. Just as he is about to do the job, he falters and decides that enough is enough and fights against his oppressive boss.
Though the theme seems rather old, there are some new nuances that are appealing and give the movie a character of its own. This action packed film also has a lot of emotions running through it. The acting, hmmm, one has to admit that Emraan Hashmi has finally been able to deliver – this film has elevated his status to that of an actor; previously he was just a chocolate boy with no acting part. He gets under the skin of the character awesomely well and captures himself to the T. About the others, well, Ashutosh Rana has done a splendid job as the don and one wonders why we don’t see him on screen more often. The female lead Mrinalini is strictly ok, but she looks like she will make it a couple of more films down the line.
After Zeher, Kalyug and Woh Lamhe, Mohit Suri once again gives us a decent flick. The music, by Pritam, is easy on the ears and grows on you. All in all, it is worth a watch. You certainly won’t feel cheated once you walk out of the theatre.
