Buddha Mar Gaya: Doob Marna Hoga

Anupam Kher and Rakhi Sawant in Buddha Mar GayaBefore I start with the review for the film, it must be said that I am extremely saddened by the level of cinema. There are those who have matured and create cinema with food for thought. Today, the average Indian too has the sensibility to separate class from crass. In this day and age, it is ridiculous for such a movie to be released, that too masquerading as a comedy for the masses. Let me assure you, this is not for the masses, unless masses stands for uncivilized, sex crazed American high school boys.

The film Buddha Mar Gaya is about a heavyweight industrialist Lakshmikant Kabadiya (Anupam Kher), who dies. But he dies when he is in a very compromising position with a hard up starlet who wants to star in his next film. His family is shocked to hear of his death and devastated, but only because their position in the market will fall. So they conspire with their family guru (Om Puri) and decide to keep it a secret. This leads to a supposedly hilarious couple of days during which the family has to pretend that he is alive and well. This is not so easy as there are a lot of people who suspect foul play.

I could probably say more about the film, but I’d rather not. Writing this out itself was quite a task. Rahul Rawail, the director of this “movie” has obviously taken inspiration from classics like Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron and newer ones like Hulchul. I wish I was blaming him of copying these films, but in fact, he has butchered cinema in the name of creating a black comedy. Firstly, I wonder if he understands the concept of black humor and secondly, there is no comedy, forget about the black. Concepts like affairs, masturbation, climax, and homosexuality have been made into cruel jokes that don’t seem to be in the least bit funny. There is actually a scene in which three men are shown taking a leak in the corner and holding each other’s members by turn for some bizarre reason. Squirts on the screen are supposed to symbolize ejaculation. It is a shame that the censor board has rejected film like Passion of the Christ and censored others like Black Friday while passing off trash like this. Not only is it vulgar, it is also an insult to human intelligence.

There is no acting to mention per say, but I would really love to ask veterans like Anupam Kher, Om Puri and Paresh Rawal how they agreed to do this? All of them have done such meaningful cinema and have built respect over the years. And then in one second, it is all destroyed. Was the money so good that it was worth their reputation and sensibility? After producing the Vagina Monologues, how could Mahabanoo Mody Kotwal consider something like this? It is very sad, because on the basis of these names, the public is misled into watching the film. The only person who does not disappoint is Rakhi Sawant for the sole reason that she portrays what she is seen as- a loud mouthed, uncultured girl who goes to any extent to make it big. No one expected anything else in her case.

For the sake of cinema, I would urge you not to watch this film. May be that will deter others who want to follow suit. Also, the tag line reads “you will die laughing”. I died, but for other reasons.
