I always wanted to make period film says Madhur Bhandarkar

On Friday, Madhur Bhandarkar, Anupam Kher, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Kirti Kulhari and Tota Roy Chowdhury attended trailer launch of their upcoming film ‘Indu Sarkar’ in Mumbai. During media interaction, Madhur stated that he always wanted to make a period film.

Madhur set the stage for his most political film until now, talking about it, he said, “I have always made films which were Bombay centric or represented glamour or corporate world through my films. I always wanted to make period film. I am huge fan of 70s era which has shown through films and music but I thought that today’s generation wasn’t much aware about period of emergency. I have realized from past 5 years, people are getting aware of politics through social media then we finally decided to make film on this subject”.

Talking about preparation which he took to make this movie, he said, “I read many books which were based on era of emergency like Kuldeep Nayyar’s ‘Untold Emergency’ and Coomi Kapoor’s ‘The Emergency’ and Documents of Shah commission. I also got lot of help from Nehru centre and National Archives in Delhi to set the story. We have kept this film through event and added fictional characters in it”.

Madhur also spoke about film’s censorship issue, he said, “I hope censor will be lenient to this film and pass it especially when film is based on politics. Now they have passed the trailer and I hope they will clear movie as well”

There were lot of questions raised in press conference that this film is based on characters of India’s ex prime minister Indira Gandhi and her son Sanjay Gandhi so that was reason he has come up with this film in the period of NDA government, replying to that, Madhur said, “We haven’t planned any particular timing for the release of this film. It’s a very neutral point of view, otherwise we would have released this film just before 2019 elections and now there are no state elections as well so the question of making film when NDA is in centre and not UPA doesn’t arise. I feel, banning of any film or book should not be done and that doesn’t happen in Hollywood also. I feel everybody should have right of interpretation on issues.”

Talking about nature of characters in the film, Madhur said, “The human story of Kirti’s character is fictional but the events which happened during 1975-77 are true which is included in the film. There is 70% fiction and 30% reality in the film. Audience will co-relate the film when they see film in totality”.

The film is set in the 1975 Emergency, the 21-month period from when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi unilaterally had a state of emergency declared across the country. And as the trailer claims, be ready to “Witness a black chapter of Indian history.”
Indu Sarkar is releasing on 28 July, 2017.
