Aahana Kumra who has worked in many theatre plays, web series and TV series Yudh with Amitabh Bachchan , first time will appeared in full fledged Bollywood film ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’ which was earlier banned by CBFC stating that “The story is lady oriented, their fantasy above life. There are contagious sexual scenes, abusive words, audio pornography and a bit sensitive touch about one particular section of society”. After continuous battle with CBFC, finally makers of the film are allowed to release the film. While speaking in an interview Aahana stated that, in our country things are seen from men’s point of view.
While speaking about woman aspirations in India, she said, “We live in city like Bombay so we think that we have very liberal views but I don’t think we have those kind of rights in India rather anywhere in the world. Women really have to fight for their rights.”
“This film is directed by women so you will see this film form female point of view which is very interesting because in our film, things are seen from men’s point of view. I feel this country even almost all countries in the world has patriarch mindset”
“When you will see the film, you will realize, we haven’t seen such kind films based on women. This film will make you realize that 60 year old or 40 year old woman can also have own story form her routine life”
When asked about what change this film bring among people, she said, “I think change doesn’t happen in one day. Change happen when you will change yourself and your thought process. With this film, I have learnt t that never to judge anyone with his/her sexuality, lifestyle or income so I hope people will also realize with this film”.
When asked about if she was expecting Ban from CBFC, she said, “We knew that, CBFC will instruct us to edit some scenes from the film and we all were mentally prepare for it but never thought that our film will get banned”.
Talking about preparation for the role, she said, “I am playing beautician in the film. She lives in Bhopal and she has aspirations beyond her marriage so for preparation of the role, we did acting workshop before the shoot of the film and we also worked on our accent as film is set in Bhopal. I also learned waxing and threading as I am playing beautician in the film and we reached Bhopal before one week start of the shoot to understand local females thought process, aspiration and mindset”.
Lipstick Under My Burkha is directed by Alankrita Srivastav and produced by Prakash Jha and Ekta Kapoor. It stars Konkona Sen, Aahana Kumra, Plabita Borthakur and Ratna Pathak Shah in lead roles. It is releasing on 21 July, 2017.
