This is the story of a idealistic, young girl straight out of a journalism school. This girl Vidya (portrayed by Koel Puri) is vibrant, energetic and motivated and enthusiastic about taking on the vagaries of this profession. In the beginning she covers the entertainment beat and is happy and satisfied with the work she does. Later due to some rearrangements in the set up, she has to move away from entertainment and take on the crime beat. Initially it takes her a while to settle in but slowly she starts enjoying her work and even gets a high for the work she does. She and her team mates manage to get a wonderful story from Rajasthan for which they get accolades, the channels ratings soar and her ego gets a major boost. This brings about a change in Vidya’s perspective on journalism and in the bargain she twists the codes, conduct, ethics and mores of news reporting. She starts setting up situations through which she can get sensational news stories for her channel.

Also the entire episode where they tape the rape upsets and disillusions both Vidya and Rafiq, her camera man. They feel ashamed that they did not help put a stop to the victimisation of Sangeeta. Vidya then promises Sangeeta that the tapes of the episode would not be aired on TV, but would be kept as evidence for the court. Vidya informs her editor regarding the same but the entire footage is telecast and the news channel celebrates this “Breaking News” as their TRPs soar. This shocks and distresses Vidya and she leaves the channel to join her uncle at his small press. Here she realises what journalism is all about, its power and ability to help the underdog. She is now motivated to fight for the justice that the victim is being denied. In this fight she is helped by her friend Bala, who is a crime reporter from a competing channel, her camera man Rafiq and her batch mate in journalism, Trishna. This fight with all its highs and lows leaves Vidya depressed and despondent.
Swati Sen in It’s Breaking News
This film despite its darkness has moments of fun and humour as the weird incidents and goings on in the media are highlighted. We have heard of Reality TV. Well this could be construed as a Reality Movie, as what is shown to occur on the big screen does in fact happen in reality. To watch the movie you need to be able to face the truth of what our society really is and wants!!
