Jab We Met

Shahid Kapoor in Jab We MetJab We Met, directed by Imtiaz Ali, takes you back a decade to Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. Imtiaz Ali has smartly adapted Aditya Chopra‘s hit film to a more rustic setting in the Indian Railways. So we have the two main protagonists Geet (Kareena Kapoor) and Aditya Kashyap (Shahid Kapoor) who meet on a train and the story takes off from there. Aditya is the quiet composed lad; who has just lost his father and his love and is thoroughly dejected. He takes the train aimlessly with no clue to where he is headed. Enter Kareena Kapoor as Geet, a bubbly character who talks nineteen to the dozen.

Rating: 3/5

Aditya get off the train for some solitude, only to be pursued by Geet, who is determined to get him back on the train. In the process, she misses the train and it is up to Aditya to help her get to her destination, Bhatinda. As the two travel through North India, events take place at every turn of the journey. The duo start liking each other on the journey to Bhatinda, and Geet’s family thinks Aditya is her boyfriend. But Geet loves another character Anshuman, in spite of her family’s resistance. She runs away with Aditya to woo Anshuman while Aditya gets back to Mumbai to handle his deceased father’s business empire. This is where the story takes an interesting turn and the two meet after a gap of time when Geet has been jilted by Anshuman.

The charm of the movie lies in its simplicity. No complex characters, no sub plots to confuse you. The story is not original, but Imtiaz Ali has filmed it in a fresh perspective. Just humorous dialogues to keep you hooked. Sadly, the Shahid-Kareena chemistry sets the screen on fire, after duds like 36, China Town and Chupke Chupke. Both deliver outstanding performances and Shahid is good as the serious, brooding heir. He has matured as an actor as he portrays the transformation from a dejected lover to a man confident of handling his life. Kareena is her usual lively self and does full justice to the role of a Sikhni from Bhatinda. She is loud and garrulous as is expected of her role. The songs are hummable; especially Mauja, Mauja and the dances are well choreographed, while the cinematography by S Natarajan Subramaniam is outstanding. The outdoor locales add a fresh touch to the movie.

The movie is enjoyable and does not slacken its pace, keeping you hooked till the end. The second half does meander a bit, but it has its sweet, romantic moments that will tug at your heartstrings. Jab We Met is a definitely entertaining movie coming after a long gap of meaningless fare.

  1. 3 stars? Huh! Boss this one needs 4 stars!! The only unwanted bit was the Mauja Mauja number towards the end – why did they bring the blonde females in the song in beyond me! Shahid is too good. Finally we get to see the matured actor in his.

Dialogues are superb and side splitting at many places. The new comer, who acts as Ansuman, the loser is funny without delivering any funny dialogues! 😀

Song that is catchy and picturised very well is Yeh ishq haaye .. (by Shreya Ghoshal) takes the limelight. Kareena as the free will, free mind lass is brilliant!

A movie worth watching a second time. 😀

Pritam – and Sandesh Shandilya – scored lovely numbers – background music is very very nice!
