Jhoom Barabar Jhoom movie review

Published on

As I was thinking of a fitting title for this review, I couldn’t help but feel that the title of the film itself fits perfectly. This is an out and out Bollywood film with the requisite dance numbers and catchy tunes. So, the audience is constantly swaying to the music. Set mostly in London and Paris, this flick still holds a desi charm to it – at all times you can feel the Indian element present. This is a good thing that director Shaad Ali has managed to maintain.

Rating: Star 3

Abhishek Bachchan in Jhoom Barabar JhoomThe film revolves around two people- Rikki Thukral (Abhishek Bachchan) and Alvira Khan (Preity Zinta) who are awaiting the arrival of their respective fiancés. Incidentally, the latter are arriving by the same train and the former two find themselves sharing a table in a crowded café. Rikki is your typical Punjab Da Puttar and acts no different. On the other hand, Alvira has adapted completely to Britain and has even forgotten her roots. She seems more English than the English. As Rikki tries to strike up a conversation, she stops him by mentioning she is engaged. He counters with the news that so is he. And so starts their conversation. They both mention how they met their future life partners and both sound like perfectly romantic fairytales. Soon, it is time for the train and they part ways, only to discover that it has been delayed. Instead of being sad, they eagerly look out for each other.

Preity Zinta in Jhoom Barabar JhoomAt this point people would be groaning at being subjected to another love quadrangle. But this is where the catch is. Though we see the opposites attract scenario, the rest of the story shapes up differently. The film ends in an elaborate dance finale which is superbly choreographed such that even three back to back songs don’t bore the audience.

About the direction – as mentioned before, Shaad Ali has done a fresh job here and it is something different. The locations that have been used are also wonderful – lending a quaint and charming appearance to the film. Though a couple of patches in the film come across as shaky, it definitely not a bad deal. The costumes too done by Aki Narula can even be labeled garish, but all is forgiven because it fits the film. If you take your friend logic along for the film, you are bound to be astounded. But then again, it is a Hindi film and logic does not watch Hindi films.

Amitabh Bachchan in Jhoom Barabar JhoomThe acting – well, undoubtedly the back bone of this movie is AB junior. He has certainly developed into an excellent performer and is the driving force in this film. Preity is a good compliment to him and carries off her role with aplomb. Sadly, though Lara and Bobby are having a wonderful look in the film, they are sidelined by the former two. How can we fail to mention the cameo don by Amitabh Bachchan? Though not too important, in his own style, he has made it important and dominates the promos.

All in all, you want to see an entertainer? You got one right here.

  5. i was shocked when i saw the movie and even more shocked when i read the review (above). This movie doesn’t deserve three stars it deserves a minus 10000 stars it was so frightening. The songs were horrible with nonsensical lyrics. Preity Zinta couldn’t act and AB was laughing at the audience at the end of the movie… why?? Because we were stupid enough to watch the movie. ABbaby was juz stupid. Bobby Deol needs a sane stylist and lara dutta … maybe a few lessons in acting.
All i can do is gag when i think about this movie.
