Lipstick Under My Burkha director Alankrita Srivastava along with film’s cast Aahana Kumra and Plabita Borthakur attended special screening of their film in Whistling Woods International Film School on Tuesday in Mumbai.

Plabita Borthakur, who plays the role of Rehana Abidi in the film talked about her experience with the movie and how during the prep of the role she discovered about her “internal” restrictions.

“I come from a very liberal background. But it does so happen that we incorporate certain ideas by ourselves internally. We automatically learn from society; I am girl I should do certain things in certain way, we internally start doing it”

“But when I started preparing for the character of Rehana, that is where I realized, I am not as free as I’d thought I am, because even though there were not any external restrictions but there were internal ones” said Plabita, who plays the role of a burkha-clad college girl struggling with issues of cultural identity and her aspirations to be a pop singer.

Lipstick Under My Bukrha is set in the crowded by-lanes of small town India, the movie chronicles the secret lives of four women in search of a little freedom. Though stifled and trapped in their worlds, these four women claim their desires through small acts of courage and stealthy rebellion.

Aahana Kumra, who plays the role of free spirit girl in the film, calls Alankrita Srivastava a fearless filmmaker and urges students to be fearless as well.
“It feels great to interact with student because they are our future filmmakers and they don’t have to be scared. They should have all the freedom to make their films and tell their stories. Just like Alankrita made it, the filmmaker shouldn’t stop themselves from making a film just because it won’t run” added Aahana.
