We cricketers stand nowhere around the athletes in terms of their training, dedication, hard work and talent says Virender Sehwag

On Tuesday, former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag launched Epic Channel’s new show Umeed India which will showcase inspiring journey of 14 athletes. While speaking to media, Virender stated that cricketers stand nowhere around athletes in terms of their training, dedication, hard work and talent.

Virender Sehwag will first time host 14 episode series, praising athletes, he said, “Till now, I have shot 7 episodes of the series and still 6 episodes are left but when I interacted with some of the athletes like Dattu Bhoknal (Indian Rower) and Dutee Chand (Indian Sprinter) that time I got really emotional when I heard about their struggles and the kind of obstacles they overcome. I feel we cricketers stand nowhere around the athletes in terms of their training, dedication, hard work and talent. If they will get proper diet and other sporting facilities then I am sure they are going to bring lot more medals for our country”

He added, “One thing I have noticed while I was shooting for the episodes that, there each day diet cost around 600 rupees and on the other hand my kids spend same amount of money on their chocolates and other things so that time it really felt bad because we have athletes who are representing our country and preparing for Olympics get such less money for their training. There are some athletes who can’t afford that but most of athletes can’t so I feel with this show, we will be able to generate awareness among people about these athletes journey so that common people and corporate come forward to help them.”

When asked about his struggle when compared to these athletes, the former right-handed batsman said, “My struggle was nothing in comparison to them. For me cricketing facilities were available at every corner, there are 1000s of academies in Delhi where (one) gets facilities and equipments. There is no struggle for us cricketers in front of them.”

Sehwag also urged media to conduct regular interviews of these athletes and highlight their issue in front of government and their respective associations to ensure that proper action is taken in that regard.

The new show will show inspiring journeys of 13 sports stars who are aiming for glory at Olympics 2020. With an up close and personal look at their training sessions, diets and exercises, the show brings to light the abundance of talent in India
Ummed India is premiering on July 20 on Epic, ‘India Ka Apna Infotainment channel’, The show will be telecast every Thursday at 8pm.
