The much-anticipated trailer for Dune: Part Two is finally here, loaded with hints about the second installment of Denis Villeneuve’s two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert’s iconic sci-fi novel. From the Water of Life to the emperor himself, the trailer gives us a tantalizing preview of what’s to come.
One of the major themes in the trailer is the Harkonnen supremacy. The first movie ended with House Harkonnen reigning supreme over the desert planet Arrakis, a situation reminiscent of The Empire Strikes Back. The trailer showcases the arsenal they have to enforce their power, including a spaceship that closely resembles the aggressive version of the craft in Villeneuve’s 2016 film Arrival.
Another highlight is Chani, played by Zendaya, who narrated the first scene of the 2021’s Dune. She appears to have allied with Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) but hasn’t lost her taste for battle, as evidenced by the size of her gun.
The trailer also teases a happy reunion between Paul and Gurney Halleck (Josh Brolin), one of the most loyal lieutenants of House Atreides who survived the Harkonnen massacre.
We also get a glimpse of the Water of Life ritual involving Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), which has been laid out by the Bene Gesserit to work in the Atreides’ favor. Jessica’s transformation, hinted at in the trailer, is something to watch out for.
The trailer also reveals the political intrigue with Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV (Christopher Walken) and his daughter Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh). The emperor, who had secretly supported the Harkonnen attack on House Atreides, is informed by his daughter that Paul Atreides is still alive.
Lastly, Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen (Austin Butler) is introduced as the natural rival to Paul Atreides. The young prince of House Harkonnen is a formidable presence on the battlefield, which sets the stage for a thrilling showdown in the film.
