Dus Kahaniyaan: Kaleidoscope

Published on

Dus KahaniyaanThe title of the movie is self-explanatory. It tells us ten different stories in one movie. Though all of them are contributed by different directors, you may find a identical tint in most of them. The concept of narrating ten stories and depicting the lives of different types of people is quite interesting. The movie has succeeded in giving the desired impact to the viewers. The demarcating feature of the stories narrated is that all of them touch upon the sensitive issues such as sex and violence. Another interesting aspect of the movie is that all of the ten stories have unexpected, to be precise, unconventional ending.

Rating: 2.5/5

The first story named Matrimony itself is a typical example to show the trend of the Kahaniyaan. Matrimony is the story of an adulterous wife played by Mandira Bedi. By giving an unexpected twist at the end, the story stuns the audience. Similar is the case with a few other stories, viz., Love Dale, Eyes Wide Shut, Sex on the Beach, and Strangers in the Night. A few of them, viz., Rice Plate, Zahir, and Gubbare had a preachy tone added in them. However, the narratives are not boring. They prove to be worthy of the time by the brilliant acting displayed by a few of the actors.

One of the best stories of the movie is Puranmaasi by Meghna Gulzar. It is the story of a mother played by Amrita Singh. The title of the movie Puranmaasi is apt for the movie because it is on one of the full moon nights when Amrita gets an important visitor at her home. It is the same day when she accidentally got dressed up as a bride.

It is the veteran trio Nana Patekar, Naseeruddin Shah, and Shabana Azmi who carved the real pictures of the characters of these stories out of the reels. They have acted so well by absorbing the characters in their souls that the audience will find it difficult to identify them as the same hero/heroine of the Bollywood. The most noticeable among them is the role played by Shabana Azmi as a bellicose Hindu woman in the story Rice Plate. She is highly prejudiced about her religion and she hates Muslims. The significant event in her life occurs when she quarrels over a rice plate with a Muslim in a railway canteen.

Overall, the movie gives a new experience, i.e., watching ten movies in one. However, it also has got a negative side that you cannot absorb them altogether as it is shown one after another without any pause. Unless the audience is given some time to contemplate over the theme of the movie, its true impact cannot be achieved. By stuffing the viewer’s brain with too many themes at one-go, Dus Kahaniyaan fails to achieve the purpose of the movie.

To sum up, Dus Kahaniyaan is a kaleidoscope of different strata of our society. Though all of them have different stories and different narrative styles, most of them have one thing in common- they deal with one or the other kind of loss in life.
