Taare Zameen Par is Aamir Khan‘s eagerly awaited directorial debut. Yet again, Aamir proves why he is different as he chose a difficult subject like dyslexia in children. The movie tackles a delicate issue of dyslexia through the eyes of the affected child, based on the experiences of Amole Gupta, the creative director of the movie. The handling is very sensitive and devoid of melodrama, that makes it completely believable. The spotlight stays completely on Darsheel and Aamir the star is totally forgotten.

The focus of the movie is on Ishaan Awasthi, ably essayed by Darsheel Safary, an eight-year-old child whose world revolves around dogs, kites, his imagination, and things other than homework. When his grades slip, teachers summon his parents and they decide to pack him off to boarding school. Here he feels very isolated and out of place among his competitive peers. He misses his family terribly and retreats in to a shell.
Aamir Khan, Darsheel Safary in Taare Zameen Par
Towards the interval, we see the entry of Aamir Khan as Ram Shankar Nikumbh, a substitute art teacher who encourages his students to think out of the box. He brings with him optimism and encourages all the children to imagine and dream. All the children except Ishaan open out and love his unconventional take on art. Ram takes a liking to Ishaan and realizes that he is dyslexic. With great patience, Ram helps Ishaan overcome his problems and realize his true potential. He makes Ishaan’s parents understand that their son is special and needs extra love and care to achieve his best. How he helps the child overcome his fears and take steps towards normalcy is touching. Several scenes will have you reaching for the tissues.
Aamir Khan with Children in Taare Zameen Par
Darsheel Safary as the dyslexic child is completely in character and does full justice to the role. His dialogue delivery and acting along with the expressions are simply superb. Without doubt, he overshadows Aamir Khan. Tisca Chopra as his mother is restrained though his father does go over the top. Aamir Khan as the teacher is very good and proves yet again how good an actor he is. He shares a convincing rapport with Darsheel in the movie, though they have very few scenes together in the movie. The music by Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy set to lyrics by Prasoon Joshi is clean and quite melodious, specially the title track. There are some great animation sequences throughout the movie that will greatly appeal to children.
Taare Zameen Par is a revelation for parents who push their children towards excellence under pressure from peers and teachers. There is a lesson for them to understand their child and to help him perform to the best of his own potential and not against superficial benchmarks. If you are sick of the action and comedy thrillers hitting theaters, go see Taare Zameen Par for a breath of fresh air.
