Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Radhika Apte, Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane attended launch of Netflix’s upcoming original series ‘Sacred Games’ on Monday in Mumbai. During media interaction, Saif Ali Khan stated that we will be free on Netflix as a platform to expose our strengths and weaknesses.
When asked Saif whether it will be a different challenge for them as compared to making a movie. He said, “I don’t see it’s different. I think acting is acting generally. I am happy and I am hoping that we will be completely free on Netflix as a platform to expose or strengths and weaknesses. It’s very challenging and daunting because we have no excuses to not do something of international quality”
“I am happy that I am working Phantom (Production house) because I feel they are perfect people to helm a project like this and I hope we can live up to wonderful reputation created by Netflix internationally”.
“I m happy with the fact that there is lack of censorship in this platform and we are free to tell a story which we want to tell. It’s an exceptional platform and there is nothing holding us back except our self. I just don’t like idea of having too many constraints”
“This book is very layered and it’s a detailed book about what India is and its cities are like and to be able to show that onscreen and to be able to play that character without having answerable to 500 institutions and asking for permission to just be artistic will be a great relief”.
Saif is the first established actor from Bollywood to enter into this format, when asked him whether he is setting trend in bollywood, he said, “Honestly, It’s not some kind of strategic move in order to be better or faster than anybody else. It’s just a wonderful creative opportunity. I don’t judge a movie star because he is on Netflix because I think it’s a great platform. There are certain TV channels that I would avoid now because what they stand for, I don’t stand for and I do stand for what Netflix stands for”.
Sacred Games is an adaptation of Vikram Chandra’s acclaimed novel of the same name.
Vikram Chandra’s book is based in Mumbai and explores the under-belly of crime, terrorism and the underworld. It was based on the SOP of police and went beyond a regular whodunit. Sacred Games revolves organized crime, politics and religion. It is about the life of Sartaj Singh (Saif Ali Khan) and the criminal underworld of the most wanted gangster, Ganesh Gaitonde(Nawazuddin Gaitonde). Radhika Apte is playing RAW agent in the show.
The project will be produced by Phantom Films and helmed by two of its key stakeholders – Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane. The two filmmakers will unite their creative energies to come up with eight episodes of this show that will star Saif Ali Khan, Radhika Apte and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead roles.
Saif’s recent films like Happy Ending and Rangoon didn’t do well at the box office, and that makes us wonder whether he is looking to increase his fan base through Netflix.
Saif Ali Khan will next be seen in Kaalakaandi that releases on September 8, 2017.
