General Hospital
“General Hospital” is a long-running American soap opera that first aired on ABC in 1963. Set in the fictional city of Port Charles, New York, the show focuses on the lives, loves, triumphs, and tragedies of the hospital’s staff, their families, and townsfolk.
In its initial years, “General Hospital” had a core emphasis on the hospital and its medical staff, focusing primarily on doctors Steve Hardy and his friend Jessie Brewer, a nurse. However, as with many other soap operas, the focus over the decades has expanded to feature a larger cross-section of the town and many different families.
Key families have included the wealthy Quartermaines, the mobster Corinthos family, and the Spencer family, with characters such as Luke and Laura Spencer becoming pop culture icons due to their popular and dramatic love story in the late 70s and 80s. Other notable characters include mob boss Sonny Corinthos, his long-time love interest Carly, and the city’s long-time Police Commissioner, Mac Scorpio.
The storylines often include a mix of realistic and outlandish plots: love affairs, family disputes, medical drama, corporate intrigue, and even occasional ventures into science fiction and fantasy, including memory implants, weather machines, and life-saving serums. Despite the show’s title, much of the action is not confined to the hospital, and over time it has increasingly incorporated crime and adventure themes.
