May 16, 2013: Shankar Mahadevan hosted an evening to raise awareness about the challenge of hunger. Hosting an event in aid of The Akshaya Patra Foundation, an NGO providing mid-day meals to over 1.3 million Indian children, he said, “I hope everybody joins us in support of Akshaya Patra as the programme is so impactful. I feel blessed to part of the Akshaya Patra family.”

The event was well attended by many of Mumbai’s industrialists, business tycoons and government officials. Some of the personalities who lent their support to the evening included Ms Sudha Murty, Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra, Prasoon and Aparna Joshi, Mohandas Pai, Praveen Kadle of Tata Capitol, Addl. The evening saw the screening of the docu-drama –‘Under One Sky’ that essayed the journey of Akshaya Patra. The live performance by children who were Akshaya Patra beneficiaries won many hearts.
Speaking on the occasion, Sri Dilip Patil, Speaker, Vidhan Sabha, said “I request Akshaya Patra to start its operations in Maharashtra.” He appreciated Akshaya Patra’s effort in tackling the challenge of hunger and malnutrition.
The Akshaya Patra Foundation is an NGO head-quartered in Bangalore, operates in 19 locations across 9 states in India. It provides hot-nutritious mid-day meal to all government school children on every school working day. Addressing the gathering, Chanchalapathi Dasa, Vice Chairman, The Akshaya Patra Foundation said, “Let’s feed the country’s children and empower them, we will then have a different India.
