His Excellency, K Sankaranayanan, Governor of Maharashtra and Shatrughan Sinha, Loksabha MP and former union minister for health did the honors by inaugurating the 63rd Annual conference of Cardiological Society of India which will be held at NCPA complex, Mumbai between 8th to 11th December 2011.

This glittering inauguration ceremony saw the presence of Dr. Lekha Adik Pathak, eminent cardiologist and Chairperson of the conference & President of the Cardiological Society of India and Dr. B K Goyal, Dr. Samuel Mathew, Dr. Satish Vaidya and many others. Nearly 4000 doctors from all over the country gathered at Mumbai for this scientific delebration. Shatrughan Sinha fondly recollected his childhood days when his father always expressed the desire that he take up the noble medical profession. In a lighter vein he further pointed out that as destiny would have it, he never became a doctor but went on to become the union health minister. Traditional Maharashtrian dancers had the audience on their feet during the grand inauguration ceremony.

Manhar Udas regaled the audience with a soulful rendition of ghazals, “Loote Koi Mann kar Dagar”, “Tu is tarah se meri zindagi mein Shamil hai” and “Hum tumhe Chahte hai aise”. Also spotted at this glittering event was Fashion designer Nisha Jamvwal. Umaesh Pherwani thoroughly enjoyed the antics of the various dancers on stage. Ananya Banerjee looked elegant in a pink saree.

Dr. Lekha Adik Pathak, Chairperson of the conference & President of CSI, Mumbai, said that Life Style diseases like coronary artery disease, Hypertension & Diabetes is increasing every day. Every 10th person moving around is hypertensive, every 5th person is diabetic & every 3rd or 4th person having either diabetes & hypertension is suffering from coronary disease. By 2020 every 5th person will have heart problems. The point of concern is that this disease is affecting younger & younger generation below the age of 40 yrs. And incidence is increasing in women. The most important risk factor seems to be the stress and strain of modern lifestyles.

To discuss various issues of Heart disease about 3500 – 4000 delegates are scheduled to participate in this mega event. There are 30 renowned International authorities along with Indian faculty who would be discussing various aspects of heart disease particularly highlighting the Indian scenario. The special highlight of the scientific programme includes – New blood thinner, newer anticoagulants, new drugs in hypertension, arrhythmias, Diabetes & coronary artery disease.

There is a strong focus on new advances – like renal denervation in management of hypertension beyond medical treatment, update of trials with ‘drug eluting stents’, bifurcation stents, total blockages. Post CABG blocks, peripheral & Aortic blocks.

Dr. Lekha Pathak further said that about 2 lac angioplasties have been done in India last year & increasing every year. Angioplasty has become the treatment of choice. The incidence of CABG is declining all over the world. There will be special talks on ‘Women & Heart Disease’ Pediatric interventions, Imaging, Technologies. PG. tract programme & grand round new concepts have been introduced this year particularly for the benefits of post graduates & upcoming physicians & cardiologist.

There is a special session on acute myocardial Infarction & cardiac failure. Thrombolytic therapy is a special treatment for ‘Heart Attack’ will be discussed ‘Lyse now – stent later. There is also special talk on combination therapy in Hypertension & diuretics still play a key role.

Valvular Heart Disease seems to decline in our country said Dr. N.O. Bansal Organizing Secretary. He said that Atherosclerotic Aortic valve disease is increasing due to long life span. Today Valve can be changed percutaneously without surgery – a well known technology known as TAVI. Permissions for this procedure are still awaited in India.

Dr. Lekha Adik Pathak further said that 4 days deliberation by various top cardiologists will prove to be a useful guide to medical practitioners in their day to day clinical practice.
A special programme for the public has been organized on 11th December at 5 PM. There will be panel discussion on ‘Heart Attack, Diabetes & hypertension’. There will be interaction with public and exchange of question & answers.
