Unveiling Society’s Taboos: Akshay and Pankaj in “OMG 2”

SUMMARY
While "OMG 2" is undeniably entertaining and educational, it falls short in some aspects. The visual representation, especially the CGI, could have been more polished. Moreover, while the film courageously tackles societal taboos, it sometimes drifts into safe territory, choosing not to challenge certain norms fully. Despite its shortcomings, "OMG 2" remains an important conversation starter for contemporary Indian cinema.

In “OMG 2”, the 2023 comedy-drama, Amit Rai splendidly employs fantasy to address the subject of sex education in Indian educational institutions. The film serves as the spiritual successor to the acclaimed “OMG – Oh My God!” (2012), featuring a stellar cast that includes Akshay Kumar, Pankaj Tripathi, and Yami Gautam.

Diving into the plot, we encounter Kanti Sharan Mudgal, portrayed by Pankaj Tripathi. Kanti, a deeply devout follower of Lord Shiva, lives a life anchored in simplicity and devotion. Yet, his peaceful existence crumbles when his son faces baseless accusations at school. As Kanti unravels the truth, he’s steered by a celestial intervention toward a path of justice, leading him to challenge societal wrongdoers in court.

It’s interesting to note the parallels between “OMG 2” and other contemporary films. For instance, both Pankaj Tripathi and Manoj Bajpayee, who had memorable roles in the renowned “Gangs of Wasseypur”, find themselves embroiled in films that leverage Hindu mythology to reshape society. Yet, Tripathi’s performance in “OMG 2” sets itself apart with its characteristic comedic softness.

The backdrop of “OMG 2” stems from its predecessor, which criticized the facades of organized religion. The narrative now shifts to emphasize the significance of sex education in schools. Controversies did arise regarding film certifications, resulting in a few alterations, particularly in Akshay Kumar’s character portrayal.

A notable highlight remains Kanti’s dedication. When adversity strikes in the form of his son Vivek’s predicament, Kanti embarks on a quest for justice. His path converges with a mysterious stranger, played by Akshay Kumar, who encourages Kanti to hold accountable those who misled his child.

Kanti’s courtroom confrontations are both humorous and enlightening. Drawing from ancient texts, he underscores the importance of sexual wellness in Indian traditions. Amit Rai ensures that while the subject remains serious, the atmosphere is light, allowing audiences to engage and understand more deeply.

The film borrows elements from Hinduism, with Kumar evidently enjoying his role’s divine attributes. However, its approach remains cautious, navigating sensitivities like diverse religious perspectives and societal norms. “OMG 2”, while magical and engaging, doesn’t shy away from highlighting contemporary issues.

One could argue that the film’s visual representation and CGI could have been refined. Still, it’s hard to ignore the strong performances, especially the comical shades brought by Geeta Agarwal Sharma and Akshay Kumar.
