VARUN BAHL- DESIGNER PROFILE- Varun Bahl, a graduate of the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi, launched his label in the year 2001. He showcased his Spring/Summer 2004 collection at White in Italy. It was there, with a tough jury of the top 10 design stores of Italy such as Tessa bit, Sugar, Penelope, and Luisa Via Roma (to name a few), that Varun Bahl’s collection was adjudged the ‘Best of the Season’ from amongst 20 competing designers from all over the world.
Varun Bahl has been showing his collection at the India Fashion Week, and has also presented the Grand finale in the year 2005. He was chosen by Camera Moda in Italy to showcase his Spring/Summer 07 and AW 07/08 in the Re-Generation Slot at the Milan Fashion Week, making him the first ever Indian designer to have participated in the event.
The secret of Varun’s run(a)way success is his ability to look beyond the obvious (what’s in), and to continuously revisit and reinterpret his relationship with his customer. He knows who he wants to reach, and he continues his love affair with his kind of customer – elegant, non-conformist, avant garde and experimental.
Varun Bahl excels at blending the vintage with the contemporary, the antique with the new, and manages, every time, to come up with another pattern in the kaleidoscope. Self-assured yet unassuming, He is a man completely without artifice, a quality reflected in the clothes he designs.
Bahl is known for his innovative use of fabrics that he creates especially for his collections. His palette resembles that of an artist – replete with nuanced colour, texture and form – the Philharmonic Orchestra recreated in fabric. Part of the magic is the sheer sensuousness of his designs, and the other is the insouciance with which he designs them.
