The Mist (2017)

Published on

Stephen King’s 1980 novella “The Mist” has been adapted for the screen several times, but perhaps the most notable version is the television series that aired in 2017. The show, which ran for one season, offers a tense and terrifying exploration of human nature in the face of extreme circumstances.

The premise of “The Mist” is simple yet effective: a small town in Maine is enveloped in a mysterious mist that brings with it deadly creatures and unexplainable phenomena. The residents of the town, including the main character David Drayton (played by Morgan Spector), take shelter in a local supermarket, where they must confront their own fears and prejudices as they struggle to survive.

One of the strengths of the series is its ensemble cast, which includes a diverse array of characters with different backgrounds, personalities, and beliefs. As the tension and danger mount, the characters’ true natures are revealed, often with shocking results. Some rise to the occasion, demonstrating bravery and selflessness, while others give in to fear and desperation, resorting to violence and cruelty.

The series also explores deeper themes related to human nature, morality, and the consequences of our actions. As the survivors grapple with the horrors of the mist and the creatures that inhabit it, they are forced to confront their own past mistakes and failings. The show asks difficult questions about what it means to be human, and whether our flaws and weaknesses ultimately outweigh our strengths and virtues.

Of course, “The Mist” wouldn’t be a Stephen King story without some supernatural elements, and the series delivers in spades. The mist itself is an enigma, with no clear explanation for its origin or purpose. The creatures it spawns are grotesque and terrifying, ranging from giant insects to otherworldly beings that defy description. The supernatural elements add an extra layer of horror to an already tense and unsettling show.

Unfortunately, “The Mist” was cancelled after just one season, leaving many questions unanswered and many fans disappointed. However, the series remains a gripping and thought-provoking exploration of human nature under extreme circumstances. If you’re a fan of horror, Stephen King, or just good storytelling in general, “The Mist” is definitely worth checking out.

The Mist is currently streaming on Netflix. Go for it.
