May 28, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): Over the years, we have become somewhat used to watching movies, directed by actor turned directors. Some of them have found incredible success while some have faltered. Either these movies mark a milestone or they just want to make us rip our hair off, in frustration.
So, what exactly gives these actors the confidence to direct a movie?
In 2000, Hrithik Roshan‘s launching vehicle was Kaho Na Pyar Hai with newcomer Ameesha Patel. It was directed by none other than papa dearest Rakesh Roshan, a yesteryear actor turned director. The movie set the box office numbers skyrocketing that year, with the songs becoming the anthem of the nation. This film put Hrithik on the map of Bollywood and instantly made Ameesha the ultimate pin up girl. Rakesh Roshan’s risk certainly paid off and after that there was no looking back. With movies like, Koi Mil Gaya, Krrish and the more recent Kites, Rakesh Roshan has definitely carved a niche for himself as a director of caliber.
But the same cannot be said for Deepak Tijori. He made his acting debut in 1990 in the movie Krodh, after that he became a well known supporting actor with movies like Jo Jeeta Woh Sikander , Pehla Nasha, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa etc. His last acting role was in the box office flop movie Popcorn Khao Mast Ho Jao. Deepak’s acting career had taken the plunge but he remained undeterred, he found a whole new way of making the viewers insane. He made his directorial debut with a movie called Oops, which was really a flop. After that there was no end to the disasters, he followed it up by directing a movie called Fareb. His latest and hopefully the last will star television star Karan Singh Grover in the lead, with three new comers, it is titled Bhaag Johnny. All we can say is Lord S.O.S!
Latest actor turned director in the line is Parmeet Sethi, who made his directorial debut with the recently released Badmaash Company; the move received mixed reviews but was a commercial success. Parmeet, whose claim to fame was the role of a tough ‘Punjab da Puttar’ type antagonist in the iconic movie Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.
