Kaafila: Running Towards Acceptance

Published on

Sana Nawaz in KaafilaThere can be no other meaning or goal towards which the film is headed. I mean what is the objective of making something like this? Was this a cry for acceptance and praise by the public and media? Nice thought, but not going to happen.

Do not get me wrong. I am not trying to be rude on purpose. It is just that if there is anything worse than a bad movie, it is a good movie that has turned bad. The subject that the movie is trying to bring to the fore is basically that of illegal immigrants and human trafficking. I came to this conclusion after much deliberation since the film was not too clear on its intent and I hope that I am right.

Talking about the first matter that the film is based on – illegal immigrants. There are a bunch of refugees who are trying to flee to a better land of opportunities from their own personal hell. All of them are not Indians. In fact, this raggle- taggle group consists of people from Russia, Europe, Afghanistan, Pakistan and our very own India. The main guy in the movie is of course Sunny Paaji who is an honest ISI Pakistani agent. With all the makings of a hero, he is the one who leads this miserable group to their mannah.

I would like to go on a little more about the story line but unfortunately, that is not to be. You see, the script writer for this film has gone on a complete tangent from what normal people understand. The result is a film that you don’t connect with. As if this was not enough, there is also a director in the picture (I am speaking literally), who seems to have taken more care about how he looked in front of the camera than how the film looked from behind it. It is quite a pathetic bid to get popular and the film has suffered because of it. Anyway, moving on, though Amitoj Mann (the director in question) has tried to add a healthy dose of realism to this film by taking direct references from the Malta Boat tragedy that resulted in the deaths of more than 300 illegal immigrants, the connection is not built very well and it is just wasted effort. Also, to give it a Bollywood feel, he has also got in a parallel track with smuggled Plutonium! As I said, weird.

I can’t help but mention the foreign beauties that have been chosen for this flick because their only job seems to look helpless and vulnerable. Plus, it is essential to be able to go into a dream sequence at the drop of a hat. Mann, please keep in mind that when you are making a realistic film, stick to realism and don’t try to mix it with commercial saleability.

If you are still wondering what the film is worth, my only answer is that it could have been worth a lot, but is worth almost nothing because the makers have not been to the mark. My verdict? A waste of money and time.
