Apna Aasman: A Small Piece of the sky

Shobhana in Apna AasmanToday it is so important for everyone to reach for the stars. It does not matter which field you consider; the race to the top lengthens even beyond the sky itself to a place which no one has seen. So involved are we in this race today, that we are unaware of what we are actually running towards. In the beginning, the future seems hazy but we are all sure of one thing-the winner takes it all. This attitude spurs us on for the rest of our lives and we push harder and stretch ourselves more; consoling and pacifying ourselves with the thought that one day the pinnacle will be reached and then we can relax. I personally have to still meet someone who has relaxed.

At least the older generation can take consolation in the fact that at least their childhood was unriddled with tensions of a future. Today’s generation has no such luck. Even before they have begun talking, their admissions are being planned with tuitions for the extra five marks, cricket, dancing, piano lessons and of course, chess. We all know that it’s a full package that is expected right?

In a world that is disillusioned and blasé to an alarming extent, we have Apna Aasman- a movie that talks about all the things that we are too frightened to talk of or rebel against. The story is that of a middle class couple- Ravi (Irrfan Khan) and Padmini (Shobhana). Like all middle class people, they too have big dreams for their only son. All these dreams shatter when they find out that Buddhi (Dhruv Panjuani) is a slow learner with mild autism. They blame each other, themselves, circumstances, fate – anything that suits the occasion. They start feeling ashamed of not only their son, but also themselves. So involved are they in trying every possible mean to make Buddhi normal that they don’t even see his talent at art. Opportunity comes knocking in the form of Dr. Sathya (Anupam Kher) and his revolutionary medicine that can turn Buddhi into a genius. The only catch is that it causes Amnesia. Throwing caution to wind in their desperate bid to make their child “normal”, Ravi and Padmini agree to it. The effect is quite stunning, but then things start taking a turn for the worse and the couple comes to realize the cost of playing with nature.

In this stark and realistic venture, director Kaushik Roy decides to talk about a problem that many of us are facing in our own lives today. Through his tale, that does seem a little far fetched and surreal at times, he is trying to tell us all something. That it is useless to run for the prize to find yourself alone at the finishing line. What use is it to push your child to that extent where he becomes a stranger to you?

Wonderfully directed, the casting has also been done with a lot of care. Dhruv as Buddhi has done a simply amazing job. Also, Irrfan Khan and Shobhana have given their usual stellar performances.

All in all, a film that will make you stop for a second and look back. Certainly worth a watch.
