Bhool Bhulaiya is Priyadarshan’s latest offering on the occasion of Eid. It is not a comedy, as you may imagine, but a supernatural thriller. It has Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Shiny Ahuja and Amisha Patel in stellar roles. Along with them you see Rajpal Yadav and Paresh Rawal in important roles. Bhool Bhulaiya is the Hindi remake of the 1993 Malayalam hit, Manichitrathazhu. The music by Pritam is already rocking the charts, especially Hare Ram Hare Ram, featuring Akshay Kumar. The editing is by N. Gopalakrishnan and S. Theeru has done the cinematography.

The film centers on a supposedly haunted haveli, the ancestral property of a Brahmin, Badri Narayan, played by Manoj Joshi. The story is set in a village, full of simple, but superstitious people. The village soon plays host to Siddharth essayed by Shiny Ahuja and Avni, portrayed by Vidya Balan. They are the son and daughter-in-law of Badri’s elder brother. They are settled in America but come to spend a month in their village. Siddharth is caught between his modern sensibilities and the legends that abound in his ancestral home. He is at ease in the village milieu but confounded by what occurs before his eyes. Avni is the right mix of beauty and brains, a perfect partner to her husband Siddharth.
Amisha Patel in Bhool Bhulaiya
One day Avni, out of curiosity opens a heavily padlocked room in the ancient haveli. What follows is a series of strange and inexplicable activities that confound the inhabitants of the village. Manoj Joshi as Badri is one doubting Thomas that never rests till he clears all uncertainties in his mind. He is a serious man who realizes things are getting out of hand and ropes in Batuk Shankar ably performed by Paresh Rawal try to rid the haveli of these evil spirits. Batuk Shankar is a perfect foil to Badri and matches his suspicion of the strange goings-on in the house.
They take the help of magicians, and tantriks, to no avail. Eventually the blame falls on Radha, portrayed by Amisha Patel, who is Badri’s adopted daughter. Radha is the beloved daughter of her father, dealing with the rejection of Siddharth, whom she loved since childhood. She becomes a prime suspect in this web of intrigue. Rajpal Yadav as Chote Pandit is found all over the place and it is no wonder that he is in the middle of every muddle.
Shiny Ahuja in Bhool Bhulaiya
Enter Akshay Kumar, who plays the role of Dr. Aditya Shrivastava. He is a psychiatrist based in America and also Siddharth’s friend. Akshay Kumar acts totally spontaneous and is anything like a doctor. He uses all kinds of techniques and ruses to ferret out the ghostly spirit inhabiting the haveli. How he does this and what happens thereafter form the surprise element of the movie. What follows are a series of surprises in true Priyadarshan style.
The movie promises to deliver a few good laughs and throw up a few shocks as well. Definitely worth a watch.

This movie was also remade in tamil – Chandramukhi – with Rajinikant in Akshay Kumar’s role.
The title track is brilliant and great to hear (except for the lousy rap 😛 ). Neeraj of Bombay Vikings – is slowly creating ripples in the music world of HFM. 😀
Tere aankhe bhool bhulaiya..
bhool bhulaiya is a wonderful entertainer. after a long time, we have a movie with a full- fledged storyline. a movie that deals with all the paranormal stuff we believe in, and shows how everything has a logical explanation, if you could only look for it. vidya balan was amazing. she has perhaps the most emotive face among the present lot of actresses. the movie is also very precise from the medical point of view. i was never an akshay kumar fan but with this movie im throughly impressed! and i was wondering why amisha patel, who is balan’s senior, would agree to do a secondary role? but now that i’ve seen the movie, i can understand patel’s motive. i just loved amisha’s character in the movie. u dont come across such a sweet character very often in our movies. and it was portrayed so well.. without glorification or trying to force the viewer’s sympathy. the entire cast was excellent. each and every character so well etched! all in all, after chak de, for me this has been the second most entertaining movie of this year.
MAST MAST and all friends here.
there is a malayalam film called
ManiChithraThaazhu – (malayalam dir:fazil cast:mohanlal,shobana)
Chandramukhi is a very very bad copy of the theme . IT should NOT BE CALLED COPY since its a Rajni film and you will see all those bullshits. So this is COPY OF THEME ONLY.
Now priyan has been doing remake’s of malayalam films (his & others) for last few years.. SO HE TAKES Fazils MCT and changes it to BB
ofcourse he’s doing justice to most remake’s since what we mallus find most of times is changes to dialogues to hindi… even shots are frame-by-frame similar to malayalam originals…
I have not seen BB but the trailers has lot of scenes from original MCT
one of the greatest scene from MCT see this scene

see how easily Shobhana does this..
Shobana got National Award for this movie
Jyothika showed that she is good only in showing skin (in chandramukhi)
lets see what Vidya Balan does…

Raam – You are right. I read recently about the original.
I am 100% sure that Malayalam film was brilliant esp with star cast Mohan Lal and Shobana (both my fav artistes). I remember Golden Child (with Eddie Murphy) was made in malayalam and was also remade in hindi with Mohan Lal doing the main role. Can’t remember the name of the movie.
I doubt if Vidya Balan could do the role well either. 🙁
Thanks Raam for the video clip. 🙂
I watched the film Bhool Bhulaiya. I love this movie very much. It impressed me too much that I want to see this movie again and again. This is the perfect mixed of thriller and comedy. I salute priyadarshan for this beautiful movie. The acting of Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan is effortless. Every actor of this movie looks very good and they acted very well. The best song of the film is “Hare Ram Hare Ram, Hare Krishna Hare Ram”.
