Sanjay Dutt has created enough publicity to launch a great beginning for all his films till time infinitum. So I guess the makers and backers of Dhamaal should be very happy with the proceedings because their film has got a huge and much needed boost. From the promos and trailers, my impression was that it is a film like Nehle Pe Dehla, Do Aur Do Gyaraah, Jodi No. 1 and so on. In short, I thought it was a complete write off. But before I thrust my judgment on you, let’s have a brief summary of the film.
Rating: 1.5/5
Deshbandhu Roy (Riteish Deshmukh) sees himself as the greatest detective in the world- this generation’s answer to Sherlock Holmes, but bungles up every job he gets. Another sample is Aditya (Arshad Warsi). He presents himself as a world-class musician and manages to get loads of praise from people till they discover it’s a tape, and not him playing all that great music. As expected, he is then loaded with shoes and abuses. Aditya’s younger brother Manav (Jaaved Jaafery) is terribly dumb and often puts his foot in the mouth which leads to crazy results. Boman (Ashish Chowdhry) is a timid, sweet young guy. This shyness becomes the bane of his life as he is bullied by everyone, especially his father. Though he tries his level best to avoid getting into trouble, he is always knee deep in it. The four live together and survive by carrying off small time con jobs. One day they hit bull’s eye while trying to save a dying man, Bose (Prem Chopra). Unfortunately for them, police inspector Kabir Nayak (Sanjay Dutt), who has been chasing Bose for the last 10 years, also reaches the spot to find the foursome next to the body. He questions them and in their fright, they vomit out the entire plan that they had so painstakingly created. And so all of them form a weird team that fights against all odds to get the prize.
Ok, if there is anybody else who thinks that this is a been-there-done-that movie, well just put your hand up! According to what I think, this film should have been released 10 years ago. But god knows for some reason it never saw that special Friday. Anyway, seizing the amazing publicity garnered by the Sanjay Dutt case, the makers have released it in a flurry. Never mind the ridiculous costumes and attires that that characters sport in the film. I think that is the least of their worries. Even if the film had been released in its own time, I’m quite sure the verdict would not have been very different. A bad story line, with bad direction and bad acting is what I have to say in a nutshell.
Besides, the “hilarious” situations are old and tired and need a much needed break. So it’s actually a wonder that the film is titled Dhamaal because it is anything but that for the unsuspecting viewer who gets a confused film instead of a funny one. So if you want my opinion, just stay put at home and avoid it even on cable.
