Rajkumar Hirani says filmmakers need many stories and cannot write every single one.
Hirani was present at the announcement of the second edition of India’s Storytellers Contest on Monday. The filmmaker will be a jury member along side, Aamir Khan, Anjum Rajabali and Juhi Chaturvedi.
Rajkumar when addressing the media said, “Thank you to Rohit and Anju (Anjum Rajabali) for starting this initiative. For years we filmmakers have been trying to tell corporates we are not equipped to write stories at an individual level and really don’t know how to do it as filmmakers. We have to go out and hunt for stories. We all need stories and cannot write every story. We need many more script writers and I really admire this initiative.”
India’s Storytellers Contest has been initiated by digital outlet, Cinestaan.
“I strongly believe stories are in a small town and people have more exposure to life there. In big cities like Mumbai people are just traveling. They don’t even go to their neighbor. I grew up in a small town and we have so many stories. There are stories out there, it’s just that they have to be found and that talent needs to be taught in that way so that they become proper screenplays.”
Hirani who has directed and written for films like ‘Munna Bhai M B B S’ and ‘3 Idiots’, says we need to respect writers more, since they are the film’s foundation.
“I think writers need to be respected a little more financially. I think they are the foundation of every film and unless you pay the writer probably the maximum amount of money in a film, you won’t find good writers. It is a big struggle for writers and I have seen people try to write 4 scripts at the same time. Because they are not sure which one will start and work.”
Talking about Cinestaan’s initiative he said, “I think this is a great initiative and I hope more people will continue writing scripts and someday we will have better cinema then we have today,”
Rajkumar Hirani’s last production and direction was the Ranbir Kapoor starrer ‘Sanju’, based on Sanjay Dutt‘s life.
