Anupam Kher who has appeared in over 500 films and has been part of the theatre circles has now been appointed as the new chairman of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), located in Pune. He succeeds former television actor Gajendra Chauhan.
The actor tweeted, “I feel deeply humbled and honored to be apportioned as the Chairman of iconic FTII. I will perform my duties to the best of my abilities,”.
The two-year stint of Chauhan, which ended in March 2017. It ended with a 139-day strike by students, who protested against what they felt was a “politically-motivated appointment”.??
Soon after the announcement, Anupam Kher’s wife, Kirron Kher, congratulated the actor on social media and wrote: “Congratulations my dear @AnupamPkher for becoming FTII Chairman! Know you will do a great job!”
Kher has also been part of acclaimed international films such as the 2002 Golden Globe-nominated Bend It Like Beckham, Ang Lee’s Lust, Caution, and the 2013 Oscar-winning Silver Linings Playbook.?
FTII, an autonomous body, was in the past headed by legendary film personalities including Shyam Benegal. Many popular film personalities have been associated with FTII, including Naseeruddin Shah, Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Shatrughan Sinha, Raza Murad, Resul Pookutty and the late Smita Patil and Om Puri.
