Jimmy: History repeated?

Published on

Movie Review: Jimmy: History repeated?Disco Dancer which gave us a star Mithun Chakraborty has been compared with Jimmy. Jimmy was supposed to bring back the glory the father lived by a son which falls flat on its nose. But how can you even hypothetically compare two different films, I agree that the background does look like a lot of the 1980s cliché film but that doesn’t make Jimmy anything like Disco Dancer. The film’s director seems to be still waking up at a certain day in1980s and has nothing to do with the year being 2008. Mithun who has loads of experience in the industry should have guided his son when the star kid decided to take up this offer. Now, it is only fair to say that Jimmy was not the right launch pad for Mimoh Chakraborty.

Rating: 2/5

Even with every channel flashing that Jimmy will be a reincarnation of Disco Dancer and even people started asking who is a better dancer among the father and son duo. Who could even place both of them together to judge? Mithun’s style of dancing is way above Mimoh. The star kid has his potentials but the way he manages to throw his fat around and the long hair plastic look he gives nothing absolutely nothing that could have been compared to his talented father.

In Jimmy aaja, Mithun went straight inside the heart to rule but with the similar stunt, Mimoh will walk out unnoticed. If you expect this kind of a film from a newcomer with absolutely no god father in the film industry, then it is understandable but not from a star son. Mimoh needs to concentrate on getting a better and new look and he shound definitely do something about his weight and work out more. His dancing caliber is ok but he needs to learn to deliver dialogues and take some lessons to learn giving right kind of expression with each situation.

The choice of the story as well as the choice of the director should have been given more thought. Director Raj N Sippy was absolutely a no fit here. The tragedy that has been created in the film is more flickish kind that fails to garner any sympathy from the audience for this broad shouldered hero.

The film’s intention was to Mimoh and Mimoh alone to show him in different scenes and different songs, more of a camouflage rather than a film. A mechanical engineer, Jimmy (Mimoh) turns a DJ by the night. He works hard to pay of the debt his father (Prithvi) has left behind as a legacy. He has high ambitions and wants to make a name for himself. Dreams woven, right! The lad is more on the dance floor than changing discs and seems to enjoy his life rather than trying to pay of the debt. Ok, dancing ability shown.

The lad suddenly stumbles upon a dead body of a young girl by chance and though he didn’t commit the crime takes the blame for an unknown cause above normal understanding. Clueless and pitiful looks, accepted. Then when he is being taken to the jail, he realizes that there is some confusion in the whole story. He has been used as a tissue paper to wipe of the blood from somebody but that somebody isn’t the person, he thinks he has been saving. Oh, pitiful situation and what a poor guy, empathy has been tried out! The bigger conspiracy is unveiled and Mimoh sets in motion a search for the real criminals. Vindicated, vindicator, a fight for justice, muscles managed to be shown.

If you call this a story, then you win. The bygone Disco era has been worked hard upon to be brought back to life but when we have much more entertaining dance numbers to watch, why go back ages to watch one.

Mimho has been well showcased. I think it is highly ambitious to say that Mimoh did make an impression. His every emotion has been captured, but what as a whole, a big zero. Ok, agreed it happens with a debut film. The lad has talent but needs a proper and seasoned grooming up.

The film didn’t score with its music which sounds more atrocious than pleasing. May the way one song made history for Mihtun and Bappi Lahiri, Mimoh and Bappa pair fail to do so. The other music directors are Anand Raj Anand and Vijay Verma.

Though there is a hoard of talented actors like Ashish Vidyarthi, Rahul Dev and Shakti Kapoor, nobody seems to be doing anything other than back Mimoh, cheer Mimoh, wipe tears Mimoh, etc. Zulfi Syed was far more unconvincing than expected.

Though newcomer Vivana as Jimmy’s girl makes an impression it is solely because of her stunning look. Over all, as the actors were not interested in working and were utterly underutilized. There has been a strong case of taking up the wrong film. Now, coming to the point of your visiting the theater, then wait for it to come on TV, the much talked about dance sequences can be seen in MTV as well.

  1. rgardless,Jimmy is the kind movie we all been waiting for, unfortunately it did not release in Canada which i expected in a theater near us,it is unfair, usually they release garbage movies in a theater and the one like Mimoh’s debut which was worthed was not release, common give me a break,he is the legend mithun’s son after all so have some respect. The music is fantastic, todays youth will love the songs, take my word for it and better go buy the CD.

  2. The music is ok, not that bad.Especially the songs— Marhaba yeh rab mera and Why not Jimmy are good.
